Is there really such a thing as fake plaits that you can use on a horses mane rather than doing plaits each time ?
And when the horse has rubbed out chunks of the mane.

We used to collect some hair after pulling horses mane and make a few spare plaits out of them. Just tied with plaiting band at top, plaited, band at bottom then stitched into ball leaving long ends of plaiting thread to attach. Worked especially well in spring when they had their end of winter tidy up. The spare plaits could then be attached to the spiky bits of mane where their rugs had rubbed over winter. Just covered spikey bits in hair mousse, gathered with plaiting band to make little stump then stitched fake plait in :)

I showed my two year old at Bramham this year and followed a horse around the ring with about 75% of its tail slowly dropping off ! Was alarmed until I realised it was a fake tail hat was falling off. Who knew such things existed !

Sticking with real plaits, is there any art form or tool, that you can use once you have plaited down, to actually roll them up with, so they are a perfect ball and tight anyone know ?

I alway figure of 8 thread the bottom to 'tie together', sew bottom up to top, fold the loop under and sew in place. Mine always look 'round'. Always used this method whether the mane is 10" long and thick (if something needs help with hoods and fat plaits) or 2" long like the ISRT. I know it might sound daft but after you've sewn the loop up, squash the plait before you finish threading. See if that helps.

ETA re fake plaits, they are tricky things to do, I never quite got any to sit right and inevitably come out halfway through a class
