Hiya, my mu went to check our 5 horses the other day and she said she found one of the natives with no rug! The Fal chieftan had come off but somehow the surcingles and front straps were still tied?? I am condisering buying a fal commander for my TB but now im not sure if this is a good idea due to having no leg straps. Has anyone had this happen to them or is our native a skilled escape artist??

About the only make of rug I have had over the years that doesn't move an inch is a FAL, I'd say horse is an escape artist. I never use legstraps and have never had one come off, although if the filet string was loose, and rode up over the tail I suppose it could have blown forwards and then come off.

is he by any chance in a field with another horse? I had a little native that was forever getting out of his rug - I couldn't understand it until I saw my mischief making 17'2 grabbing his rug by the back at the bottom and pulling it over his tail and then over his head. It could come off completely without being undone. I hate legstraps with a passion - and have never had a problem with a FAL rug so I would suspect you have a real escape artist

Yeah she is in a big field with 2 other horses (one of which is very intelligent and can open gates and doors?!) Maybe he is helping her!

ah ha - that sounds just like my chief mischief maker - I would put him down as chief suspect. Mine would remove ballcock from water drinkers, take lightbulbs from fittings, let himself out of his stable and then go around the yard letting all other horses are - returning to his stable and pulling door to behind him. Oh and as a finale would turn on all taps in yard.

The pony could be telling you he is too hot. I have known of a few horses over the years who will take their rugs off if they feel warm.... all straps in tact! I have never seen one do it, so I can't tell you how on earth they manage it.

We have been having funny weather recently, it can be arctic first thing, and tropical at mid day. I would think it is entirely possible that the pony was feeling warm, especialy as he is a native.

I used to always buy Rambo rugs for my horse...but have lost count of the number of times they've blown over her head...even with the fillet string really tightly fastened.
And no other horse involved....all rugs without leg straps can do this in high winds.
It used to happen to fellow liveries too.
Now I buy rugs with legstraps and I've never had it happen with them...I also find I don't worry about them being left naked in windy and wet weather.

One of mine did a striptease last year and I found his rug with everything still done up. I think he did it himself, he was trotting round the field looking very pleased with himself. I was not happy (he's a grey). I think it can just happen like that sometimes...

You really should get him on film, you could make a fortune!

OP it does sound like your horse is either a Houdini or is being "assisted". We use FAL's and absolutely swear by them, they never slip let alone come off.

I had this happen to one of mine in a FAL rug last year - it happens when it's very windy. Horse turns tail into wind (as they do) wind gets under rug and blows it over the horses head, just like taking off a sweater. Don't know if tightening the fillet string would help or not when a real gale is blowing
