So, I was going to get the girls a 40g PE rug with neck cover. Then I read a thread on here about their rugs not being very waterproof and there was lots of unhappiness from people who'd bought them.

I started looking at other 40g rugs and wondered if anyone has the Fal Pro Chieftain and what you think of it? The girls are lightweight Sec D X's, but one has very deep shoulders and a big neck.

How do you find the zip attachment for the neck cover?

Any other recommendations for the same weight rug gratefully recieved, I do want detachable neck covers and don't really want to spend more than £100 per rug.

thankies.

xx

Me and my mum both have PE 40g and they have been fab and not leaked through this constant rain - they fit really well (I have a lw tb and my mum has a hw irish cob and they fit both!)

I really recommend them!

I've got the fal pro- fits my Arab beautifully, and she gets mistaken for a lightweight sec D sometimes! Don't have the neck cover though so not much help. It does seem to be quite a warm rug though, it is all she had on all winter, even in the snow.

I bought the 40g Fal Chieftain last year for my lad. Like you I looked at the P.E. first but the Fal was much cheaper so I went for that. I have a couple of P.E. rugs that I'm very pleased with but their prices seem to have gone up a lot in the last couple of years. The Fal is great - my lad has worn it in driving rain, wind, snow, etc and it hasn't moved or leaked. It's well cut, is lovely and deep and has plenty of room round the neck and shoulders. I do find the zip to attach the neck a bit of a pain - it's easy enough on the floor but I haven't yet managed to get it on while still on the horse! That may just be me being a bit 'special' though! :o

I wash and repair rugs, I have had a few fal rugs where the zip either break, ie the teeth come out rendering the zip useless. or the stitching comes undone and neck and rug seperate, i now keep chunky 12 inch zips in just in case.
I would reccomend Horseware, amigo or rhino depending on how much you want to spend. I have not had any problems with P E rugs either.:)

Thanks for your replies.

The girls have just had a new Rhino Wug (the no-fill one) each, and they've been brilliant through the recent rain. I've just looked at the Horseware site though, and I can't see any 40g turnouts, which is what I want. I also really want either a high neck or a detachable neck cover, that the PE and the Fal Pro both fit the bill (along with the "under £100" price tag!)

The PE is £85 at the moment, and the Fal Pro £99, so there's not much between then in price - I'm just a bit worried about the recent comments on PE rugs.

Recently bought 2 PE 70g rugs and they are fantastic, totally waterproof and well worth the money. Fal have seriously gone down in my estimation, unless you can find an "old" one, new ones have been very disappointing :-(

I really rate Fal rugs, I also like Horseware & Amigo. Premier Equine are very good quality rugs but I don't like the front fastenings. Personally I think the minimum of ironwork on the front of a rug the better as a horse can get caught up in a fence with disastrous consequences.

I've had both fal and horseware, and would go for fal every time. My original Fal is now 12 years old, and I have never had a problem with the zip. It has also never leaked. I find the that horseware now come up much smaller than they used to especially the rhino rugs, since they switched their production to china, although last time I heard rambo were still made in Ireland

!2 yr old fal would be one made in britain, I have a couple of british one's no problem with them at all. I ha ve just had quite a few in for repairs, with zips coming unstitched, breaking, and also the lining pulling out from around the skirt of the rug, nither of these faults occurred with the older rugs, the indian rugs are not the same quality as the british made ones.:)

I have a whole set of Chieftain Rugs they are probably three years old now and I love them, waterproof even in heavy prolonged rain, tough and an excellent fit on my Welsh Cob and everything else I've put the rug on.

I also have a PE 40g rug, it rigs my cob but fits the Welsh D X TB well, it hasn't leaked yet but isn't nearly as tough as my old Fal rugs.

What about Pessoa rugs has anyone tried them?

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm a bit worried about both brands now - does anyone have any other recommendations for a 40g turnout?
