Just wondered if anyone had used this product and if they'd had any success with it? I'm trying to put condition on a horse who isn't a big eater and although he isn't thin he always looks 'run up' (if he was a competition horse you'd say he was fit!) but he's nearly 17 and semi retired. He was always a fat sort of cob but I've struggled over the last 2 years to get rid of this 'run up' look. His coat is great (lots of dapples) well wormed, blood tests etc fine>

Never heard of it but thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Having looked at the ingredients, they tick every box for me. And it's good that they have balanced the phos/calcium ratio for you and added vit E.

(Vit E can be lost with an older horse and this contributes to a poor immune system.)

I feed everything in it to my old boy already as straights (cheaper in the amounts I need as total forage replacer), except I use wheat bran rather than rice bran because it's easier to obtain. But rice bran is better.

If you can afford it I think it would be very much worth a go.

I dont like the falcon feeds in general, the bio care which is supposed to be non fizzy made my mare go hyper! And the youngstock mix was pretty bad as well, i used the omega rice alongside the youngstock mix as my gelding was very poor as this is what they advised and he didnt gain weight at all over three months (sept-nov), i switched to dodson and horrell yearling cubes in December and he picked up, i didnt change anything else! It may work for you but i personally wouldnt recommend

I really rate Falcon Feeds! Haven't tried the Omega Rice, but my horses are on the fibre care, and bio care ocassionally too. Both have done so well on it.

It also helps that they are just up the road!

I tried it in the past but the horses didn't like it and none did well on it. I have a veteren who wasn't a big eater and looked desperately run up and poor actually. It wasn't what I fed him to start with that worried me, it was how to get him to eat at all. I ended up lining up a load of buckets with a different food in each and I let him loose to choose. I found that he liked nuts rather than too moist food which surprised me. He would however never finish a feed and therefore he wasn't eating enough volume to meet his needs.

I spoke to D&H and they suggested feeding their Ultimate Balancer which is small pellets as he would get all the nutrition he needed without having to eat the bulk. Anything extra he ate would therefore be excess calories that he could store. He now looks fab (he is 29!), his appetite has perked up and he eats a good sized bucket of Alpha A with a scoop of Build Up cubes / Senior conditioning mix, with the balancer added and topped off with speedibeet. He has this twice a day.

I really rate DH& Build up cubes - they stack up best against so many other so called conditioning / senior foods and I have always had the best results with them. If getting the horse to eat the amount of required roughage, eg chaff, is hard then Fast fibre is a good way of getting it into them too. And don't forget Pink Powder is good for this sort of thing too!

Good luck with it all x

Thanks all, I've got him some to try and he loves it! He can be fussy and will refuse to eat some balancers, I'd go so far as to say he nearly ate the bucket with this in! Whether it will help with his condition I'll just have to wait and see. Will give the D & H cubes a go as well. Two winters ago he would go all night without eating so much as a blade of hay but I found Thianmile B (sp) made by Equine America a godsend to increase his appetite.

Glad to hear he likes it, i found that most horses like it to start off with and then all of a sudden they go off it! Be careful of the Alfafa, i had about three bags that had huge rocks in so if you are using it just sift through what you feed, Equine America VMP and Vbiotic are really good supplements to try and of course feeding oil and cider vinegar helps with appetite, good luck

I have used FF and 2 horses were allergic to it and had terrible skin conditions! As soon as we swapped feed it went away. I must admit now thinking back the horses did pick at it alot of the time where they normally see food and finish the bowl before you know it. We were told to try Omega Rice which we did but didn't really see any difference even upping the quoted amount. It might suit some but not all.
