falling asleep on the farrier - please help

something rather worrying happened at lunchtime today - the farrier came to shoe Dealer for the first time since ive had him and he nearly went to sleep! His eyes closed and his head hung and i thought he was going to fall over! He didnt and didnt even stumble but he sort of leaned back aganst his head colloar and lead rope, if you know what i mean. I hope this isnt nacalaepy (SP) any ideas any one? ive never seen this before on one hand it was amusing but on the other it was a bit scary.
 
i cant see how - he'd been in all night - did half an hour in school then been in field for 2 hours! it was funny to see though!
 
maybe he just likes being shod? Flash gets this ridiculous dopey look, and my friends horse used to fall asleep completely leaning on the poor farriers back!
 
ive heard the term 'good with farrier' but this is taking the p**s!!!!! Seriously though i did think he was going to fall down x
 
Hemir gets like that....spedns about 10 mins tibling his back support the puts his head on his haynet and falls asleep

I think it just relaxes him....and you know he is really relaxed when he lets all hang out.....almost everytime farrier comes to do his feet

You say its the first time you have had the farrier since you have had him, so I assume that your horse has'nt been at the yard long? He may just be tired. It can take a long time for a horse to settle in new surroundings and he may not yet be comfortable sleeping as deeply as perhaps he would do. Certainly doesnt sound worrying. Be thankful he is so relaxed in yours and the farriers company!
 
All of ours do this

Probably because our farrier has a bad back, so takes him over 2 hours to do a set, plus loves talking to dad about fishing!

Don't worry horses legs lock up, so even if asleep they will stand up.
 
Lol Dougal is the same with our farrier sometimes. Our farrier has a bad back too and also recovered from a pretty nasty condition as well a while back. Apart from not wanting to hold a particular foreleg up sometimes, he also goes drowsy or just very relaxed and will lean all over the farrier unless he is told to stand etc.
When he has his foot on the stand ( don't know technical term for this piece of equipment) he will also rest his chin on the farrier's back whilst having his feet rasped etc.
 
OOOOHHHH yes!!!!!!!!!! Having read the ost ttle again i see what you mean! In actual fact i probably would fall asleep on my farrier - bless him - He's no dream machine!!!!!
 
An older one of ours did this a while back and actually fell over!
We were so worried we got the vet out to check his heart/bloods etc, but the mystery was solved soon after when we saw two of his field companions running him ragged for hours on end, the poor boy was knackered..
Give him a poke with something sharp like a hoof pick next time, and he won't fall asleep!
