Poor big bill had a bit of a shock tonight, he fell on the concrete slope that connects down to the woodchip area. His backend gave way & there was a pretty impressive spark off his shoe!
He appears to have escaped with small tiny cut on inside of off fore & a bigger gouge on outside hind fetlock - not deep enough to need stitches & too awkward to bandage. Lucky he didn't skin his knees!! He was pretty shocked though & once got up he stood for few mins to work out what had just happened! He is still a bit unsettled but there's not much I can do about that.
But as he went down on his hip and has no visible cuts, is it correct to assume it will be swollen/bruised? I've never had a horse go down on concete that hard.
What would the best way to treat that? Can you cold hose a hip?!
I've intrasite on his cuts & he's currently in his yard that attaches to the stable, so he can walk about as much as he wants.
As he fell tonight there is no swelling but assume by morning there will be, which will get the basic hosing. Is there anything else I can do?
