My pony is shod on the front but not on the back, and has been for many years, after she got nail bind in a back foot and I just never had the backs put back on. I kept the fronts as I do a lot of road work. However, the tracks tend to get very wet where I ride and she has slipped over and fallen down twice now, once whilst spinning around as I brought her in from the field and once while I was riding. Only at a walk but she messed about shying at something and completely went arse over tit, nearly crushing me. As she has gotten older I find sometimes 'the back -end goes' a bit if I go too fast round a bend or something and its muddy. But this last fall bothered me a lot as it was only really walking along, she has always been very surefooted, despite being a crazy lunatic, but seems to struggle a lot in the mud these days. She recently had a very thorough Vet check so I know apart from the usual old age stiffness she is in good health. What are people's opinions on the best grip in the wet/mud? Would it be better for her to just have all four feet bare? Or would a full set and studs be better? It seems to be the back feet that slip about, never have any problems in front unless its really icy. Thanks

Have nothing useful to add but will be watching this thread intently... Mine is barefoot behind and has been for 8 weeks, I don't know if it will help in the ice/snow or not? I can think of pros and cons for both though.
Shod: ice balls up, perhaps not as much grip
Unshod:no compacted ice, but no opportunity for studs so maybe less grip. Hmm!
