This poor lad got himself tangled in the wire fence and caused a large vet bill for his owner. Serious damage to the coronet band, unfortunately when he was field sound again he started to become footsore due to stony ground to the field so owner put front shoes on. However Horse which is now mine has now been moved to a yard which is Mud & concrete! So having been taken barefoot as his feet just looked terrible! He is pigeon toed anyway so makes the whole situation worse.
I'm aware of terrible pictures!
With shoes on - makes me cringe

No shoes and Just after the farrier had been.

Does anybody have any ideas on ways to get this to grow down and heal and look 'right' again I know it'll take time and effort but i know he can be barefoot since he's been barefoot on the back for 3 years odd. Farrier only recommended regular trimming but wanting to know if theres anything more I can do!

If he is sound on tarmac, I would take him out (in-hand to start with) as many times a week as you can, given the daylight situation (although every day would be ideal, you might need to walk round the yard/school/driveway on the days that you can't get out on the roads in the light). You can start with a short 10 minute pootle and build up slowly from there, eventually riding and then trotting too.

I suggest this because the key IME seems to be twofold, 1, diet and 2, stimulation/movement on whatever surfaces the horse is sound on. If you are able to get lots of walking done, you should need to trim less frequently and the hooves will improve (although they may break off to the nail holes to begin with).

This, definitely.

Plus I would scrub out the mud and disinfect daily with hydrogen peroxide at 3% strength., I would also ask your farrier about filling it with resin, just to keep the exposed cavity dry and sterile while it grows out .It's a risk for white line disease as it is, I would have thought.

It should grow out fine. The top is marked but it looks solid.

The only place he isn't sound at the moment is stony tracks. I've been walking him on the road for about 5 minutes already so will continue that. I've got my fingers crossed that not having nails in will stop the cracks he's getting! and Ill ask about the resin- would the keratex putty do the job?

My experience is that won't stay in such a big hole, but if you are prepared to clean, dry and replace it every time it comes out, it's lovely stuff with a gorgeous smell and natural resin disinfectant. The thing you can't afford to do is risk sealing any infection in, because the bugs just love an environment low in oxygen. On balance I think I'd rather either proper 'permanent resin' or flushing daily.
