Fancy dress ideas?!

Depends on whether you want to win or have fun!

If you want to win you need something ideally topical and/or unusual. Or something that is very clever, and that the child has helped with (or at least can pretend to have helped with ;).

Olympic and Jubilee stuff has probably been done to death by now, nothing much else springs to mind. Paralympics could be done, but might be seen as a bit near the mark - visions of pony sporting a couple of Pistorius blades... Would Anna Karenika be too highbrow (film just out, thinking of pony as a train :)) or perhaps not. Is there a local connection to a famous character perhaps, or a place name that could be utilised?

If you want to please your daughter and have fun, then anything pink or glittery and pretty usually works! I have seen these done many times but they are straightforward - spanish lady, a clothes horse, little miss moffat, sea horse (fun and easy, rider can wear snorkel etc), police horse, zebra, spiderman (pony as a web), a rosette, Robin Hood, the Lion, witch and wardrobe - you have to be the wardrobe obviously! - goodness, there are so many.

Some judges like home made costumes that the child has obviously helped with, while others go for the most spectacular, even if they are mostly shop bought. It is very subjective, so don't be disappointed if you make a huge effort and get nowhere.

I went as a thellwel once... Used soft felt saddle with crupper under the tail... I wore a tweed type jacket, tied learner plates round my waist, muddied my jods... Painted on freckles... Etc etc I came second. Bloomin teletubies turned up and blew me out of the water *rolls eyes* typical! This was about 18 years ago....
