We are going as Zombies. Look how effective fake blood is on white legs - we had a trial run on tuesday 
(its the £1 a tube stuff - it stayed on overnight mind you - and he still has a slight pink tinge!) I also have fake brains to attach to his bridle and plastic intestines to tie to his girth. I hope he doesnt end up with a pink face though as I plan to have blood splattering down his blaze

Here's the brains. I had to cut out space for his ears and I plan to sew it to my bridle. I'll try and get a photo of the whole thing on saturday (we are The Galloping Dead team SJing ;D)

Headless horseman/woman? You could make her a pumpkin mask & a cloak.
Frankenstein & his monster?
Or a witch and her cat?
wizard & dragon? Little dragon wings on the pony could be quite cute.
Or on a cuter note-- Hercules (or Meg!) and Pegasus. May only work if the pony is a grey though.
Otherwise I can't think of much for kids. My costume is for a party that I (sadly) can't bring my horse to haha! I am going as Harley Quinn from the game Batman Arkham City. One of the few characters that's blonde and badass
