Took the boy out this morning, he was a superstar.
Bit of background - the boy is my daughters 16.2 IDx who i am looking after whilst she is at University. He is a good boy, but he is a big lad and has a bit of a buck on him. He has had me off quite a few times, the last time as i was starting canter on a sand track.
My own horse was sadly pts 6 months ago and i spent 5 years with her, lots of problems, medical issues that i won't bore you with, but the main ridden issue was she could not canter, she would pace or flat out gallop with no breaks (scared the bejesus out of me) but due to her health issues i could not sell her on (would worry where she ended up) so kept her and just did walk & trot until she broke down completely.
So getting back to today, took the boy in a field i have permission to ride in, its a large field with a slight incline up, farmer has just cut it so nice and flat and we cantered all the way up it, he did not buck, i had a grin on my face and it was just lovely. He had a small spook at a bird flying out of a hedgerow but i was fine, i did not panic.
He went at the pace i asked him, and as soon as i asked him to come back to trot he did, not fuss, no arguments, i am so chuffed with us.
Just goes to show how lessons, patience and gaining confidence slowly can result in days like today.
Happy positive post from me - yay!
