Mine had his cultured cells implanted into a core lesion in his tendon last week. He has been fine but today there was alot of heat in the leg and it has swollen slightly...Is there a chance his body is rejecting? Can they reject their own cells?

My old boy had it done on a suspensory ligament. He was initially very sore and swollen, but it soon went down. I was very concerned at the time too!

However, he came sound within 3 months, which was very quick for the injury he sustained. He also had cartrophen, box rest, controlled exercise and shock-wave therapy, so it is difficult to ascertain which had the most impact, but I would endorse stem cell therapy as it is supposed to improve the quality of the healing and this seemed to be the case. Felix's ligament was scanned and it appeared completely clean and no evidence of trauma at all, all fibres nice and straight and no shadows. However, I can't prove that any individual treatment was responsible for his recovery, only careful management and a result of a number of different strategies.

I'm not 100% sure but I'd be surprised if they reject their own cells as rejection is caused becuase of markers on the surface of the cells, and if they are your own cells then your body will recognise those markers as self and so accept them. If they are foreign cells then your body will recognise as foreign (although different markers display different degrees of "foreign"). Thats why when they do organ transplants they look for a tissue match, where the donor and acceptor both have similar tissue types, or markers, on their surface. I guess the cells could change in culture but the marker type is determined genetically and the genetics are not going to change, so I would find it surprising if they can reject their own cells.

Good luck, hope your boy recovers

This sounds exactly like Josie's leg went. That was about 10 days ago. She's now sound, and walking out twice a day, no swelling only a tiny bit of heat.

My vet saw the swelling and heat, and he wasn't too concerned. I'd say it's all part of the process.

Hope he recovers x x x
