I'm not a freelance groom however if this helps - I was looking to find a freelancer recently for yard cover and from my point of view as an owners perspective I would want a freelancer to have more than a couple of references- written if possible with contact numbers and a CV -and insurance definitely is a must have !
I have the CV and the references, it's just I have never gotten around to insurance and I am thinking I really should!
Off to a breaking/training/racing yard in the morning for them to 'see what I've got', and this yard has quite a reputation locally - hence the sudden insurance query!
Hi, i have basic accident/injury/illness insurance so if i can't physically work then i still have some sort of money coming in. If, say a horse in my care got injured etc i know i'm covered by one of the yards i work at...not sure about the other one!
you really should check that you have 3rd party liability cover too in your policy as you are at rick of being sued if something happens to a horse while you are working it and the owner goes after you for blame/ compensation.
I have it up to 3 million i think and also you should be asked what value the horses are you ride, dont underestimate this as if you think it will save you money to say the horses you ride are all under £10k but are'nt then you may leave yourself open and not actually be covered.
With insurance if they can get away with not paying out they will so make sure you cover all the possibilities and dont leave yourself exposed.
Remember everyone is nice until something goes wrong and then you find out who your friends are, often dont trust that relationship to get you through as you may find out to your cost!
I suggest you contact British Grooms Association, Lucy Katan. I believe she's in Bejing ATM but back soon, obv! She's really helpful on this sort of thing. Look on their website too (google it).
