Someone recently suggested using diluted fabric conditioner as a mane and tail conditioner..has anyone tried this?? If so..how much fabric conditioner and how much water??

I seem to spend a fortune on mane and tail conditoner..any other suggestions??

I use pig oil and sulphur - not only has his mane grown seven inches in six months, but it's so soft and tangle - free it's fab. Ditto his tail . sm x

WOW..Ive just got some of that for his feathers to protect from mud fever and mites..

Didnt realise you could use it as a conditioner!!

Thanks for that xx

Might be being a little dim but do you buy the sulphur seperately and if so where from? I have pig oil already. How much do you mix with it?

also wouldn't use fabric softener on a horse. At the moment i am using Avon skin so soft. I use it diluted to keep the midges off and it happens to keep her mane and tail gorgeous without being an oil slick. Got a few bottles off ebay for £2.50 each inc postage so way cheaper than mane and tail conditioner!!

Buy PO and S premixed via ebay - £25 for 5 litres inc delivery, and the first lot lasted me five months over the winter. I cannot believe how much hair has sprouted on mane, tail and feathers, on an already hairy pony !! I keep saying, I should buy shares in the stuff :D

You can buy the flowers of sulphur from a garden centre, or online (I think).

I apply the oil onto his mane line and the tail bone, and then brush it right thru the mane and tail. Looks like an oil slick for a while, but you'll soon get results. Once a week does it. I do the feathers once a fortnight, but still look like they've been fertilised by powergrow... sm x

had to laugh, sorry - erm yes I have when a crisis in the bathroom has emerged, and far worse.........I have used hair conditioner in the washing machine.. they are all made of the same sort of stuff I gather.. but this is what happens when you rely on hubs to do the shopping :D

It may not be too long before I'm sporting the PO and S quiff around the house at this rate....:eek::eek:

Value furniture polish is much cheaper as a tail detangler! And yes, I have no qualms about using it on my mare's tail. I sit on her, after all, which kind of puts her in the furniture category, in my eyes. ;)

Mind you I use all manner of random unsuitable crud in my own hair, too. :)

I havn't used fabric softener but I bath my horses in liquid wool wash ie Stergene or Woolite. Been doing this for around 30 years and none of my horses have had an adverse reaction. Leaves the coat silky and shiny, and dirt slides off for a few days afterwards.

Ive used it on my horses, i just really diluted it loads, and it works fab.

And i am one to use anything on my own hair...... horse shampoo is the best for human hair though.

Ditto ALL of this!!! Furniture polish is just as good for detangling hair as it also contains various silicon based compounds.

I also use all kinds of stuff in my hair (including shower gel and bubble bath) when I've run out of shampoo!!!!

never used fabric conditioner but i have used the furniture polish, i found that it made her tail and mane sticky and didn't feel nice at all. gone back to the real thing.
