The farm that i keep my horse on has just bought a rescue dog that is chasing the horses. I have seen it nipping at my mares heels sending her cantering around the field. The owner does not seem to see how serious it is and i do not want my horse injured due to the dam dog! However i really like the yard i am on and have a lot of help there with my horse ( i work long hours) i really do not know what to do. Has anyone else had problems with dogs?

Just tell the owner that you have seen horses kicking at the dog and it is only a matter of time before the dog is injured.

If he/she won't take this up, how about taking the dog and trying to train it yourself? as you like the yard so much? I overdid it with younger male staffie (well aimed dandy brush as he went to bite my horse) - he won't go anywhere near horses at all now!

I would try the 'dog will get injured' approach first to keep it friendly, but having had a YO Alsatian attack my mare in the field after repeated warnings I would perhaps follow it with pointing out they would be liable for injuries caused by the dog. Mine ran to thousands and ended up with solicitors! Hopefully pointing out the dent that may occur in their pocket will get them training it!

Mmm, difficult one. I think you need to try the approach of you're "worried about the dog getting injured" thing first and see how that's received.

For heavens sake, if this is a rescue dog then they need to keep their eye on it; this just isn't good enough IMO. If it will chase horses it will also chase things like sheep, so they blimmin well need to keep it under proper control.

My horse was at a place last summer where the two dogs from a local riding school chased the horses in the field one morning; a few days previous to this I'd seen them "stalking" the shetlands in the fields, looking very odd, but didn't really twig what was obviously in their minds, and then a few days later they'd actually chased after some of the riding school horses. Mine hadn't got attacked, but was very hyper when I went to him in the field, so obviously had seen it and got stressed.

So this is something that has got to be sorted, coz else your horse is gonna get very nervous of dogs and/or anything else around its legs, its something that could easily build up.

IF the owner is still lax about keeping it under control after you've spoken to them about it; you could always try contacting the rescue place where it came from (if you can find out where it was) as they should be concerned if one of their dogs is causing a problem and/or the owner isn't taking proper care of it, OR you could contact your local Dog Warden. You can apparently do this anonymously.

Just tell Yo what happened to my young dog on Sunday. I've tried to stop him chasing my horses, because he thinks its a game, 3 of them ignore him but my young welsh sec d I think has been chased in the past, lashed out when he ran up behind, said dog is minus 3 teeth, factured lower jaw, had several bone fragments taken out of his gums. Picked him up Sunday evening and paid the bill £424:51pence, lucky the pony isn't shod, also taught my OH a lesson as well as he's never really bothered to try and bring the dog under control when he's chased the horses.

Our field is adjacent to a public park, there's a double fenced rough brambled/tree area, quite wide, between us and the park, but it's riddled with rabbit burrows, and folk encourage their dogs to go into the fenced area to chase rabbits - and every now and then they pop through our fence and go chase our ponies, who kick out at them. These are the dogs that never come back when called, and there's a particular Staffie type dog called Daisy whose owners really tell it off when it does (eventually) go back so I'm not surprised it doesn't want to return to its owners

If I happen to be about and catch one of these dogs, they almost never have a dog tag on but if they do I ring the owner and tell them to come and get their dog before the ponies kill it. If they don't have a dog tag I ring the dog warden to come and collect.
