The farrier came today to shoe my mare, Turned her in the field aferwards, went home as you do, came back after lunch and there she was Lame, Front left. Called the vet, gave the mare bute, (for pain) Call him back (he came a few hrs later) took the shoe off, placed a rubber sole on her foot after pinching her foot to say " yer that's the foot!" then put her shoe on and off he went. Did'nt even get a refund....The poor horse looks in pain too, have put a deep bedding in her stable... HAS THIS HAPPEND TO YOU!!, what else can I do for the horse..

When I first started to shoe, the farrier told me that it is inevitable that I would lame a horse on more than one occasion.

So long as the farrier put the job right for nothing. You'd have a job getting a refund!

It's very annoying when it happens, and thankfully I have only ever lamed one, I knew darned well when the nail went in that it hadn't gone right. Sure enough next day he was lame, took the shoe off and within a couple of days he was sound again.

If you shoe a horse you stand a chance of laming him, if you go barefoot you stand a chance of laming him! Swings and roundabouts.

It happens sometimes - the nails get just a little bit too close and the horse goes lame. Usually the offending nail pulled out and put back in again or the shoe replaced. I wouldnt expect a refund though, however I would expect my farrier to come back pretty promptly.

Mine always has.

No nail in to close, the shoe was put on to tightly, so he said, so what he has done now is placed a rubber sole on under the shoe. he took over 2 hrs to get back out to me, so now he has lost all my business. I no these things can happen, but he has made one hell of a mess on the mares foot...

Two hours?? If my farrier came back that quick, knowing how busy he was, I would be pretty darned impressed! Like the others have said, it's just one of those things. Don't be too hard on your farrier, believe me it's difficult to find decent ones, let alone decent ones that will take on another horse.

[/ QUOTE ] I think two hours is a very quick time to come back out - he can't really abandon someone else's horse in the middle of shoeing, can he!

I agree with spaniel it does sound like he has taken a bit too much off and I also agree with the other posters - 2 hours is pretty quick.

oh... but when you see a horse/animal in pain,2 hrs is a long time. But i understand what you all are saying..thanks

Yes, two hours is a long time to wait for a vet to come to put a horse out of serious pain, but for a farrier? The horse has four legs and is perfectly capable of standing on three for a short while, much like you would sit down or stand on one leg if you had trodden on something sharp or had put some too small shoes on and couldn't get them off. TBH a farrier's schedule can't realistically revolve around one horse!
