..and Jerry was much better behaved this time, had a pocket full of pony nuts and kept the head occupied and he only had a couple of 'moments' so was really pleased with him, thanks for your advice everyone, so glad i perserved

Hector was also shod, and my poor farrier had his work cut out, there is nothing to nail into, he has no new growth and my farrier had to put the nails quite high up to get a decent hold, so not really expecting him to be sound tomorrow tbh, he is normally a little footsore after shoeing anyway but think he will be worse than normal. farrier suggested putting cooking oil on his feet rather than the thick grease i use has anyone tried this? he has incredibly flat feet, very crumbly and he just doesnt seem to grow any foot

he has biotin and seaweed to try and improve the growth but any other ideas greatly appreciated

thats the stuff i have been using, but my farrier doesnt like it for some reason, he said as the ground dries up to use a thin oil and hose his feet for 20 mins a day to try and get some moisture into them, he said thick greases are great in winter when the feet are dry but not so good in summer

i use cornecresine in the winter and hoof moisture in summer. my mare has terrible feet alway's breaking. but this seem's to work. well for the moment anyway!

My farrier suggested I use cheap old sunflower or vegetable oil on my boys feet. He had horrible dry feet that broke at the drop of a hat when I got him, but painting them with sunflower oil every day really made a difference. I would seriously give it a go.
 
Have you tried Kevin Bacon's hoof grease? My farrier recommended it. It is really fab for stopping cracking in the summer, but I don't know if it promotes growth.
 
Cornucrescine should only be applied to the very top of the hoof around the coronet band. It is supposed to encourage growth and this is where( I think! Feel free to correct me if I am wrong))the hoof grows from. If you put it all over the hoof it will have no affect other than to stop moisture getting in which you dont want. Could you soak his feet in warm water?
 
I feed both of mine Equine America's Hoof Power Plus... the farrier said Hannah would really struggle without shoes because she has flat feet (a bit like me

) but he has commented on how well they are looking and how strong the new hoof is that has grown. I asked him to be honest as to whether he thought there was a difference, and he said whatever I was doing, keep doing it because he has never seen her feet in as good condition!

Grace also has a few cracks in her hooves, and was on a supplement when she came to me. But, the farrier has said hers have improved so much since being with me, and when I told him I had been giving her the Hoof Power too, he just laughed and said it was worth every penny then

Glad Jerry was a good boy for the farrier, it's such a pain if they decide to be difficult to be shod!! Regards hoof quality, I use cornicrescine and vegtable oil mixed together in the summer and stand them in the river a few times a week. Biotin is really good for improving hoof quality esp is you can get pure biotin.
