To all those who expressed an interest in the above:

Sadly it has been decided that we will not be going ahead with the farrier / trimmer demo day on 21st July. This is purely because, despite approaching loads, we have only been able to get one EP to commit to taking part and as time is ticking on it's not fair on the farriers who have blanked out the day in their diaries to leave them waiting and wondering whether to book in work or not.

We are very sorry to have to do this but it would be unfair to hold the if the numbers and quality of participants was not equally balanced. Thank you for your support and to those of you who offered the use of your horses we are very grateful for your generosity and saddened not to have been able to make this day happen.

Thanks again. Who knows, maybe we'll try again in the future!

Sally

Ah that is a shame.

Will look out for a possible future date!!

Such a shame this did not work out as I think it would have been a very interesting demo/debate.

It does strike me as a bit odd that this kind of demo would benefit EP's more that it would normal Farriers, yet there is only one EP coming forward.

Don't jump down my throat, but in my mind this just strengthens the argument that EP's do not have adequate research and training behind them to replace a conventionally trained farrier.

This is what I was thinking.

Was the EP who was coming mine (Trevor Jones)? Only I saw him about an hour ago and he said he had been in touch and I got the impression he would probably have gone.

And in answer to what is being said above, I think the main sticking point is that with Equine Podiatry, the success of it is about more than the trim, it is essential to have owner commitment to the conditioning programme.

The other thing, and I'm not saying farriers aren't busy .. all of us who have tried to get one in a hurry know that is totally not the case, but because there are so few EPs, they really are under a lot of time pressures and may feel they don't have to advertise, even if they would like to share what they think is a better way.

Anyway shame it didn't come off

well done Sally for trying.

Trevor was one of the EP's I contacted and he did appear to be keen to attend if he could. In order to be fair to everyone involved, demonstrators, the generous owners who had offered their horses as guinea pigs, organisers and those interested in attending, we felt it would be best to set a deadline of 1st June to say yes, we could go ahead or no, we'd have to call it off, and unfortunately he was unable to commit one way or the other by then.

We are very disappointed this hasn't come off. We had planned to video the horses involved before and after trimming and have the footage put through a gait analysis programme to assess the changes in performance which could have been very interesting.

Shame it wasn't to be this time.
