I'm the only person that uses my farrier on my yard, i phoned him om the 21st and asked if he could come out on the 30th to do my horse and he said no because he was going on holiday but he didn't say when he was coming back and i couldn't book anything too far in advance. So he still isn't back (can't get a hold of him) and my horse lost a shoe in the field today. She is normally ridden everyday but i cant ride her without shoes as her feet split, so she needs done asap. There is another farrier that comes to the yard every friday... what would you do?!

i would ask the friday farrier if he could replace the lost shoe and then book your usual farrier to reshoe as soon as he can after he gets back from holiday

Ask the farrier to replace the shoe on Friday so u can continue to ride. Is your farrier back from holiday in time to do your next routine shoeing?

Routine shoeing was supposed to be at the weekend but cant get a hold of him! Horses feet and shoes were looking decently good for going 7 weeks but the mud sucked one off today:(

Always book in when he comes to shoe, for the next set and my farrier always has someone to cover for him when he goes on holiday, never ever ring up when you think they need shoeing as you will find he's fully booked up, as nowaday everyone books 6/7 weeks in advance

Cant book 6-7 weeks in advance as away every weekend grooming at shows or working from silly times in the morning till silly times at night and by the time im finished week days its too late for him to come out. Not because i dont want to, more because i cant really, normally phone 2 weeks in advance when i know what im doing.

but if you book in advance then you can sort our other jobs around this date? no wonder your farrier hasnt made arrangements for your horse to be shod by himself or who covers for him. sorry i think this is a client issue not a farrier issue.. maybe you ought to change to the farrier that comes every friday? that is if you can fit a friday in??

Sorry i never knew there was a farrier code on when you had to book! I give 2 weeks notice, plenty time and he is always happy to come out. If hes on holiday its hardly fair to keep bothering was merely asking opinions on what i should do. Working with horses, you don't get many days off especially not at the weekend and i cant just skip college for a farrier visit.

Just ask the other farrier to pop the shoe back on.

My farrier went away on Holiday and my horse wasn't due until he came back. While he was away she nearly lost a shoe, she had lost every nail bar one! And the shoe itself was turning under her foot!

Other farrier was up doing another horse and I slipped him £10 and asked if he could just put the shoe on so it was secure until my farrier got back. It was no problem :)

Don't worry, my farrier actually prefers me to drop him a text a week or two before I want him to come. As I'm only one horse and near to his home he can slot me in around other stuff when he knows his movements and when he is due at bigger yards etc.

I don't book my farrier when he's out either. He's quite happy to get a text or a call a couple of weeks before we want him. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't read anything in to the situation (I'm not an hysterical type by nature) and would have the yard farrier bang the shoe back on and have my own farrier out once he returns. I expect there is a good reason you use your own farrier rather than the regular one and you probably don't want to change!

Thanks! Yeah yard farrier banged shoe on this morning, me and him get along great. But he is semi-retired and only takes on so many horses at a time and only if they are well behaved. My mare was a bit temperamental with her feet when we first got her and he recommended we use another farrier as he was only taking on so much, so i just stuck with this farrier. There is another farrier that comes to the yard for 2 other girls, but he causes dramas and id rather not touch him with a barge pole!

Not all farriers like to book 6/7 weeks in advance! And for alot of owners it just isn't practical, i wouldn't read too much into it if unless he says anything else! If you're happy with his work then just try and deal with it :)

I would ask the farrier that comes up every Friday if he wouldn't mind replaceing the shoe. Keep trying your regualr farrier and if he doesn't answer this week, next Friday ask the farrier to re shoe your Horse if he has the time.

I never book in advance (awful I know) But I have a fab realtionship with my farrier and he will always squueze me in. However I do accept that he won't always be able to do this. And I don't mind waiting for him to come out. With my work, I never know what time I have to be in early etc. so hard for me to pin point a time.
