Just been having a nose at local farrier to me on the register and the majority have letters after their name with the relevent qualifications, but some that registered in the early 70's have no letters but are catagory 1...... Which means experience or something... can someone explain?

yeah thats the bit I read, and said the catagory one bit means experience and able to do it as a profession.... does this mean they have no qualifications but are deemed ok to shoe??

Sorry. I think I have misunderstood the question :o.

The register gives their qualification and then a 'Part'.

The 'part' bit is this:

The different parts to the register of farriers are as detailed
Parts 1, 2, & 4 are entitled to shoe for gain

Part 3 are not permitted to shoe for trade or reward and are therefore not included in the search results

"......Experience may have been gained before the introduction of the Farriers Act 1975". So like us old folks who are able to tow a trailer without taking a test. Or from an EU country where they have a different certification. So loads of experience or a different qualification. So yes OK to practice.

Right so if a farrier has no letters after their name, but has a part 1.... it basically means qualifications were not neccesarry then, but they were deemed competent through training they had been given, lol

basically means they can shoe due to grandfather rights. bit like if you took your test before 1997, you can drive a 7.5t without hgv
