farriers apprentice messed horse up

A farrier sends out an apprentice who trims a yearling and after notice youngsters hoof turning out, say to the apprentice and he says its coz he is young and will "grow" out of it. i get my vet out as notice knee is twisting round

it was coz his hoof had clasped and hoof wall damaged! he couldnt beleave he had been seen by farrier 4 weeks ago. makes it worse, his show career is a no go this year and the vet and farrier said it will take a long time to get his hoof back round and knee may never go back to normal way as got so bad.

what can I do?
 
Surely if the farrier is training the apprentie he should be supervising his work? I would think if you are wanting legal/financial redress that your claim would be against your farrier, as he will be responsible for the work of his apprentice (well that is how it works in other jobs) How far into his training was the apprentice? I am pretty sure there are rules about how far into the training they can be before they are allowed to work on their own. Check with the governing body perhaps?

Agree with above. If they are apprentices surely they should be supervised?
 
An apprentice can't work without supervision from a qualified farrier - and it's doubtful that what you describe happened after one trim.
 
They can!

Sadly as soon as the ATF thinks they are 'competant' they can send them out on their own - It happened to me, Farrier was always sending students and when one of mine had a problem (foal got abcesses in 3 feet after her first trim) I asked for the farrier to come and see (poor filly had been trimmed too far back and very badly - caused lots of problem) :mad:

I now use a qualified farrier and refuse to allow appentices to work on my horses unless the farrier is present.
 
I too had problems with an unsupervised apprentice several years ago....I wasn't made aware he was an apprentice untill he trimmed my horses feet back so far he was footsore and had an abscess......my OH rang the farrier who blamed it on 'how they teach them at college':eek:

Needless to say I changed my farrier to the superstar I have now.....
