Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of any farrier forums that are still active? Iv found a few but they havent been posts for a year or more or is there a few farriers on here!?
Im after a few different oppinions on my horses feet

I am getting another farrier out to look out in person but thought also be a good idea to get other views regarding photos and saying what has happened to them seeing if there are more to one side on what would be the best thing todo to help him 🐴

Thanks guys!! 😊

Yes, post post post away - many people on here with what some might describe as an embarrassing amount of hoof knowledge :p (note, I'm not one of them)

How do i post pictures ? I wrote out all i wanted to say and then no idea how to attach or post the photos

You can upload them to your Facebook and copy image URL then in "advanced" post editor, click the image button and paste the photo in the textbox

[IMG]I only baught him just over month knowing he didnt have perfect feet. basically he had been left in a field with over due feet and pulled all his shoes off with his previouse owner ( she had gotten married honeymoon and he was basically left on the back burner ). Hes only just turned 6years old He has already lost two shoes in the time of me having him, my farrier has given me his opinion on what he beilves is best for him I would just like to see what other peoples opinions are/through their own exsperiences. Keep shoes on? Take them off? He is fed on molasses free hifi with biotin and seaweed along with now ordering keratex gel If there is anything else you would like/need to know ? Hoping this has worked

Sorry Loulabell these must be URL links rather than image links... I tried to look for them but I can't see on Facebook.

You need to try and copy the image URL by right-clicking on image itself... thats the url you need then, select the "insert image" icon in the advanced editor and paste in there.

For facebook pictures from your phone I found that if you open facebook in a web browser (safari on i-phone), then click on 'full size picture' and then copy the web address when the image comes up in a new tab.

Would you mind doing that me emailing them to you as i cant get to my lap top as its upstairs and i cant use the stairs due to damaging my leg fell off the said horse . i have tried again with the images but still cant get the correct url

If you are on a computer, click the photo to enlarge, right click and select copy image address then paste it between

For a phone/ipad etc then you need to do as AH says. Click and select open in new tab, then copy the information in the address bar and paste inbetween

Hi, photos will be up soon another kind lady is going to put them up for me as i stillcant find the correct url as i cant get to my lap top heres the story so far

I am also out of action after falling offi have done my nerves along with my tendons/ligaments and un sure of how long Untill i am back.
I have had another farrier out and he has said what i have been thinking aswell but would be interesting to hear others
Thanks

Given what you have said about his feet and your injury, I would be inclined to turn him away with no shoes for the winter. His feet can recover while you heal, and then reasses in the Spring.

Incoming!

My word those hooves are long. The hoof wall looks very thin at the toe and all the way around the quarters... there are no sole shots or a view of the back of the hoof but I can already see that from pic 1,4,3 & 5 those front hooves are contracted and shod well forward of where the support should actually be. Those heels are long and contracted. The hoof horn quality from mid way up the hoof to the coronet band looks good, but whats going on below is excess hoof wall, coupled with quite a poorly balanced trim I'm sorry to say. You can see the angle the hoof wants to be at, but then grows forward. If there were x-rays that come with this, I would say that there could be a bit of lamellar separation at the toe. Does this horse trip at all? How does he land when walking? Toe first or heel first?

I would say that this horse does need a shoe holiday to sort out the contraction or else you could be looking at "navicular" pain issues long term. Even a short time would be beneficial.

This.

What breed is he?

If quality does not improve in six months when the current growth comes down from the top, then I'd be looking at feeding additional minerals.

He's pure thoroughbred (was bred for point to point ) he's on biotin and seaweed and now going into farriers formular.
The second picture is of his hind, doesn't tend to trip. Lands heel first He was vetted which stated he had low heels which will come with being shod correctly.
I could t get pictures of his under or back of his hoofs as I'm on crutches one leg I. A boot and the other severely tissue Damaged so can't do that much.
I had another farrier come out yesterday ( sooner than what I thought ) but he said the same as what I had been thinking was the correct thing todo for him which is have his shoes off until the start of next year ( non ridden) to allow time for it to grow out and start again on good fresh hoof. Needed the 2nd opinion from another top farrier and other people to know I am going to be doing the correct thing rather than just going off my own instincts and then second guessing my self, thanks guys he should have them off next week as farrier is coming out for other horse I will have to post updates of his feet!

Seaweed can be really bad news unless you know that your forage and grazing is low in iron.

You might be better off putting him on one of the no iron, no manganese supplements designed for our British grazing, which it typically too high in those things. Available from forage plus, progressive earth, and equimins.

Id take shoes off and turn away.
Feed him a fibre based diet with a supplement, something from progressive earth would be good.

You can recover from your injury then get start working together in a few months time.

Definitely turn him away unshod and let his feet recover. You can shoe when you are riding again if the barefoot bug hasn't bitten you!

I would ditch the seaweed/biotin/farriers formula and go for a specific barefoot supplement as mentioned above. Progressive Earth Pro Balance would be a good one to start with.

Post your area and someone might recommended a good barefoot friendly farrier or a trimmer who can help you out. Having someone supportive really helps.

My second opinion farrier will be doing him as we had him years ago for our old tb and recommended to us through rossdales new market and he is on the same opinion/ side as me I would love if after he was able to stay bare foot but we will have to see how he goes. Nice to know I wasn't the only one thinking bare foot and time off would be best for him.
