I live in Co. Down, Northern Ireland and I was wondering if anyone from around these parts uses a farrier that supports them in keeping their horse barefoot?

Any recommendations would be gratefully received :)

Not too sure how he feels about it as a whole, but my (very very good and knowledgeable farrier) Philip Johnson was very supportive of me taking the shoes off my horse for a while this summer; he had terrible feet and not much there to attach a shoe to. He was very honest about my horses feet and gave me a lot of very useful advice. Horse is shod again now as it wasn't a 'going barefoot' thing, but we won't go into that! ;) He trims my friends unshod (and in work) mare.

Might be worth contacting him for a chat to see what he thinks. If you want his details PM me, the phone number on the Irish Farriery Authority website doesn't look quite right!

ETS: He is from Rathfriland but seems to travel anywhere and everywhere!

Mine is supportive but he's in the South, Dublin area. Also another one who has been nagging me about getting the shoes off of mine. I'm working mine too. My hope is to continue bare. So far so good. I think there is a good bare guy up your way though. I think one of his clients has a jumper doing the 1.30's so might be worth a look. I googled bare trimmers in Ireland and found him.

Yeah, that's probably Dermot McCourt. I used him at the beginning and my horse ended up on Danilon for a month. He trimmed his hooves down to stumps and exposed the lamina so much I could see blood! Some people rave about him but my experience was not good.

Thanks for your suggestion anyway :)
