Hi everyone,

I'm considering a career change into Farriery from a non-equine job background, I was wondering if anyone has done similar? If anyone has any advice on the apprenticeship with an ATF and how that works? I'm in Dorset and would welcome advice or if anyone knows of an ATF in the area.

Thanks,

Matt

You will need to start on a college course - think its 2 years to begin with, so asking at equine college would be the best place to start. When you go out on apprenticeship the college will be able to help.

No you don't - although a lot of equine colleges try to tell you that you do. You can do an advanced apprenticeship with an approved training farrier and undertake the relevant exams etc whilst working. The FRC has the guidance on training here http://www.farrier-reg.gov.uk/farriery-training/becoming-a-farrier/

Only 3 colleges are actually recognized by FRC for approved training - Herdfordshire & Ludlow; Myerscough and Warwickshire. Other colleges do offer courses, but this won't actually count toward registration.

There is a link on the page to search for an approved training farrier. It would probably be worth ringing one or two for their experiences of people in similar situations as you. Might also help you decided which route to choose. Good luck!

Thanks for your help SullivanB and Shay, its much appreciated :) I'll have a search through local farriers and then cross reference to the ATF list and go from there :)

I would rather go the apprenticeship route with an ATF and take the exams while working, I don't think that the College course would be that feasible. Thanks for the advice :)
