Fashions!! What's in now/What do you remember!!

Adding to my post in Stable Yard re 3 ring gags that seem to be all the rage at the moment, thought I would ask you all what you think the current fashion is in 'equestrianism'!!
Depends on what discipline you do I suppose, but here's my little list which you are welcome to add to!!

3 ring gag bits
sheepskin half pads worn with dressage square underneath
pink (anything)
purple (anything)
Joules clothing

When I was a kid it was
Puffa jackets
hats with elastic, always over the top of hat NEVER under chin!
Drop nosebands
Beige Jods, colours hadn't been invented then!!

So over to you, what's in now and what do you remember from a few years ago, should be good for a laugh!!

I am revising for my BHS Stage 2 and that is like travelling back in time 30 years. Single feeds, bran mashes, rugs with seperate surcingles, etc.
 
Sorry but I am probably the most unfashionable person on my yard. Today I rode in 10 year old jogging bottoms and a ripped & muddy nylon jacket which originally came from the oxfam shop. Horse went quite well however despite the lack of designer clothing!
 
I don't think the equestrian clothes market had got very far in the 80's. So I was used to horrible nylon jodhs, I used to wear full length chaps that I had made for me. I had the hat with the elasticated chinstrap, the jockey skull with flash coloured silk on, rubber jodhpur boots.

For the horses we had canvas NZ rugs, grackle nosebands, stubben saddles, and fed a lot more straights such as oats and bran mashes.
 
We had rubberised riding macs, cork hats and beige nylon jods, all from the caldene mail order catalogue!
The horses had canvas rugs and seperate rollers, can't remember where we got those from.
 
Wow yes I forgot about the jute rugs and canvas turnouts/NZ! and making up feeds from scratch, only 'complete' feed was Spillers horse and pony nuts! and using old blankets from home that you folded into a triangle at the front then put the roller over the whole lot, rug n all! If you were rich then you had a Laveham rug and a Whitney blanket!

All the horses had black builders buckets for feed and water too! Don't think colour had been invented! Yep always rubber boots and saddles were pretty flat with hardly any knee rolls! and I am not THAT old!

Hasn't the horse world changed considering the vast choice available now just look in any catalogue we are spoilt for choice!

Ooh, things I remember from about 10 years ago when I used to read Horse & Pony magazine religiously (despite my lack of either horse or pony!)-

Jodhs were beige or navy- if you were very adventurous there may have been red or something

Children wore jodh boots (brown with square toes) and joddy clips- now you can get half chaps for toddlers!

Skull caps had the cup you were supposed to put your chin in (that might be a bit older than 10 years ago)

No horsey stuff came in PINK!

I am such a throwback I have plaited red reins on one of the ponies, and a string girth on the other - and yes I feed oats and straights, and it was only 7-8 years ago I was still using cut up blankets from home, jute rugs and rollers and canvas turnout rugs
 
IN:
diamante headcollars, browbands, bright colour coordinated training gear with brands screaming at anyone who walks past, likewise competition gear, headsets between coach and rider, exotic arena surfaces and extra warm and fluffy polarfleece rugs with colours and patterns.

OUT:
i dont know... only been around 14 years... all i know is that i used to wear full chaps. havn't seen anyone in them for a long time. are they still in? omg and riding in shorts and bikini is OUT for me lol u can get away with it when u r little though!

Green or blue paddock jackets - if you were trendy you'd have a body warmer over the top!
Long thigh length socks or leg warmers and long rubber riding boots (always stylo matchmakers! LOL!)
Finger-less gloves

Blankets folded under rugs and surcingles
All the horses and ponies were fed bran and sugarbeet feeds - and only the hunter/comp horse had a scoop of mix!
Plain, hunter-like bridles on all types of horses - nothing rolled or fancy! LOL!
Saddle/pony pads for anything under 13.2hh!!!! There were NEVER any saddles small enough for a shetland! LOL!!!
Hoof oil - everyone used it all the time! I don't know anyone who uses hoof oil now! LOL!

Now a days...
Albion KB bridles....
Bling
Dressage saddles as standard (noone had anything other than a gp - unless you showjumped!)
Travel boots
Pessoa's
Gadgets
Every type of different horse feed imaginable!

The list is endless

In the past:-
Having one of everything for your horse.
Grooming kit was Dandy Brush, Body Brush, Mane come, Curry comb, Hoof pick
Now:-
Loads of different bits, different bridles, saddles for different disciplines, loads of rugs.
Grooming Kit has so much in it I can't begin to name it all.

I remember getting my first non canvas NZ rug. It was a shires one I think with cream furry lining. I thought it was soo cool not to have to heave a stinky heavy canvas NZ on every morning, and it actually kept pony warm as well as dry, so could start to clip a bit more hair off.

Remember all the old pony management books that said only a trace or chaser clip should be used on an animal that was turned out. Now rugs are so good that hunter clipped horses can still be warm and cosy out all day.

I love my HW rugs and neckcovers.

I still wear my full chaps BTW. They are v warm and cosy to hack out in.

Any long leather boot, it didn't matter what make they were! Now days only Konigs will do

I think I had a puffa jacked that lasted about 10 years.
Jute rugs and putting straw under them as a cooler as fleece wasn't around.
over reach boots that made a clickty-click sound when you were doing showjumping

the fashion now seems to be bling bling bling. It must be a pain to clean I would have thought, so I will stick to my old stuff that doesn't have pinky bling bits

Bedford TK lorries were 'modern'
Riding without stirrups wasn't taboo....nor was jumping a grid with no reins

No horse ever saw an Equine Dentist...if they were lucky their teeth were filed by the vet once or twice in a lifetime

There was no such thing as a 3-ring gag....and a waterford was an extremely severe bit to be used in very extreme cases...
People used to enter in advance...not turn up on the day.
