I rode a 14hh cob last summer, after the boy that was riding him lost his nerve. The horse didn't flinch when I got on him (same size & weight as you) and we quite happily jumped a few fences. The horse coped no problems at all but I did feel he was a bit small for me - then again I am a fan of BIG horses and was riding my Mum's 16.3hh shire x tb at the time!
I am an inch taller than you and the same weight and my pony is a 13.3hh fell. I feel absolutely fine on him, so I really don't think you're as limited as you think
Bear in mind he is quite wide, I'd look daft on something his height of a smaller build. If you were going to go for a pony I'd say get a wider native or a cob

thanks guys to be honest am more of a 16 tho! been told am too big for a 16hh horse, but dont want to limit myself when looking for a new one.

Ah I see!! No 13.2hh natives then
I also used to ride my Mums full throughbred (nutter!!) who was 16.1hh. Although he never worried about carrying me (never complained anyway
) I always thought he was a bit narrow (thought my bum was probably wider than his
) so now tend to stick to cross breeds and have no such worries

It is possible that if the horse was very very fine, and you have really long legs then you would "look" big on it......... HOWEVER I dont see how at 5ft 7 a 16hh horse is too small for you.......
Piccy of me on Mum's 16.3hh Shire x TB hunter
**I KNOW HE'S FAT** it was last summer and he was two weeks back into work after having the summer off, we were at a local show doing working hunter, lol.
How can ANYONE say that about someone who weighs 11 stone
Most men I know weigh 11 or more, and I know plenty who ride 16hh horses
Honestly, it really gets my goat when people get on their high horse about other people being 'too heavy'. Most of them dont have a bloody clue what they're on about
I have a 15hh cob and a 16hh wb - and I am 5'6" and much heavier than you and there is no way I am to big/heavy for either of them!! Need ladders to get on my 16hh.....
IMO your height and weight barely limits you at all - any well built native type, section D or cob of about 14.1hh upwards will carry you fine. If you prefer finer types, I have a friend the same size as you who had a 15.2hh TB and also rides my 16.2hh TBx. Both carry her fine and look 'right' size wise. I think at your height the only limiting factor will be saddle size - you probably wouldn't want to be riding in anything less than a 17"; 17.5" would probably be better for 'bum room' and leg length, although of course it depends on your build. So long as the saddle suits you and the horse, your weight will not be an issue
My ponio is a 14.1hh Native X (we think there's a lot of Welsh D in her) I'm 5'8 and a tiny bit and just under 11 stone. My sister is about 5'10 and 12 stone and she carries us both absolutely fine! So you could go as small as 13.2 if it's a stocky native but if you feel more comfortable on a slightly built 15hh Tb then you also have nothing to worry about!!!
For Eriskays (12.2 - 13.2) we usually say 12st max. Plenty of adult women compete on them and they handle it with ease. I know of one 14st man who hops on an Eriskay on occasion and the pony carries him with ease. But that is an exceptionally stocky and fit 13.2.
Your height would be more of a problem than weight imho for 13hh and up natives.
Im the same height and weight as you and i ride 13.2 upwards and am not too heavy...obviously i dont ride anything thats 13.2 and really fine but anything with a bit bone you will be fine on!
I'm 5'7 and weight 10stone and my 14hh welshx pony manages fine with me, although i feel like if i lean to far one way i'll slide off the side! I also share a 15.1 welsh D with my mum who must weigh 12stone so I wouldn't worry. The people who told you you're too heavy are crazy!
At the trekking centre in scotland where I used to work the highland ponies were 13.2 - 14.1 and had a weight limit of 15 stone. They regularly carried 6' + men with no problem and were so round they didnt look to dwarfed by them either. As long as the horse you are on doesnt have any weakness or problems with its back i cant see why on earth you should be too big for it?
