I have a heavyweight cob and can't find a rub to fit him properly. He wears 6'6" Masta rugs at the moment but they just don't fit properly. All suggestions gratefully received!!
Masta rugs don't fit anything! Mark Todd tend to fit broad ones well. My broad ID has one of those, and all the Horseware rugs (Rambo, Rhino and Amigo) fit her brilliantly too. Don't go near Masta or Shires! If MT/Horseware don't fit, you may find your horse is more of a Weatherbeeta shape.
Bex - how long have you had your MT and is it still waterproof? Random question but my first three were all fab, but my fourth seems to be easily soaked through now...? I still like them though as I have known a lot of MT rugs and this is only one of two that are no longer waterproof - they are very hard-wearing too! It must just be neglected
had both for a year, a LW and a MW. The LW has been washed but not reproofed and the MW hasn't been washed at all, and both are still perfectly waterproof even in really bad weather
Ah, I've had mine for two years and it's only just these last few weeks been showing it's lack of waterproofing (had it washed once or twice but not re-proofed). I had a full set of lightweight/mediumweight/heavyweight for my last pony and all were fantastic!
Weatherbeeta too tight round shoulders for charlie (coloured in sig).
Charlies wardrobe is 95% rambo mid necks as fit him beatifully and last years and years! some of them he has had 8-10 years and still good as new! so well worth the money.
Whenever I try buy cheaper rugs, they hardly even last 2 seasons!
Maybe I don't have a horse then because they fit my ID nicely! My only real complaint about them is they're so heavy to lift on & off when wet & muddy but that probably isn't helped by them being 7ft - it's more like moving a small tent some nights!
Jumpers Horse Line are ok but a little snug on the shoulders for Jim, Premier Equine are very good & lighter to handle.
Nari I too agree about Masta rugs as I have a lovely 7ft Masta delux stable rug for my 16.3 clydesdale cross and it fits him lovely. In fact it is about the deepest rug I have for him. So I really don't agree about the Masta rugs don't fit anything comment made by Silmarillion at all.
My tip would be when trying to assess a rug fit is to measure middle of chest to end of hindquarters, withers to the top of tail and the middle of the spine down towards the end of the belly. Armed with these measurements if anyone ask the sellers or manufacturers of any rugs they should be able to give you these measurements quite freely. It is then fairly straightforward to ascertain whether the rug you would like will fit or not.

Masta fit my big shouldered built like a public toiler hunter really well, and my chunky haffie coblet!!! And they fitted every other cob in the yard too. Mark Todd also very good.
They are not mini skirts exposing tums and bots like Weatherbeete (which always rub round the neck and too tight).
Rambo also good, and Fal. And the Dominick ones sold by Eq clearance altho that is a bit shiny inside and slips forward on haffie coblet.
Weatherbeetas but the original ones with the side gussets. The Freestyle ones dont seem to fit chunky types. I tried the Masta and they just dont fit right at all. Mine is a Welsh x TB and the WBs fit her lovely.
My "fatty" coloured cob has a FAL rug - expensive but brilliant as he is a wide boy round the chest and shoulders i find they fit him the best. He has a Mark Todd rug as well which i find totally useless with him as it gapes round the shoulders and lets the rain in...
He looks so much like my Skipper they could be brothers! I think I'm going to look for a M Todd or Horseware. He's going to be half clipped so I need to buy about 3 or 4 to get him thru the winter. His lightweight Masta is useless - not even worth the trouble of putting it on!
