This isn't usually an issue "over here," in general most horses are leaner rather than fatter, but there is a real problem with Merens. They are a very "round" breed, a well rounded apple bottom is expected, but more recently I've been seeing more and more photos of extremely overweight horses.
I constantly worry about the weight of my two, and although they are built quite differently (T is the typical short and round, B is generally larger, not as round, but very prone to easy weight gain), I try my best to keep their weight as healthy as possible.
Ideally T still needs to lost about 50kg, but B is just about right at the moment. (T is 430kg on a tape and B is 520kg)
Then I saw a photo of a young Merens on FB... never again will I say "oh my horses are so fat"
When I suggested that he desperately needed to lose about 200kg, I was laughed off by several people, who said "well, perhaps 80 or 100kg". And I'd thought 200kg as a starting point, I'm fairly sure he could probably lose 300 and not be thin.
