Took a pic this morning, as people keep saying my mare is really fat, I have now restricted her grazing to 5 acres, from the 50 or so she had (shared with others of course!) however does her confirmation look ok - someone said she was cow hocked - and do you think she does look too fat?

I cant see that she has cow hocks from the photo you have posted. She doesnt look fat to me and I am used to much finer horses than this. How old is she? I am not a fan of horses like this but she is very striking to look at. :)

imo she is not 'fat' at all. She is in the norm from what I can see but dont let her get any bigger. Its hard to tell if she is cow hocked from the pic (hind view would help) but maybe just slightly. I think she looks lovely and is obviously much loved. Love the cat too!

She may be just a little cow hocked - hard to tell from the pic. That's not necessarily a horrible thing.

As for being fat she doesn't really look it to me but the best way to tell is to run your fingers along her ribcage and see if you can feel the outline of her ribs. If you can feel them when pressing lightly, she's fine. If you can't find them, she's a bit fat.

TBH, she does look a little plump to me, but if your grass if anything like ours at the moment, its difficult to keep them slim! We have 4 on about 3-4 acres that they have been eating for a while, and mine is still a bit porky :o

For her type i think she looks ok, certainly wouldn't want her any bigger. I think she is rather lovely :D love her big pink bottom lip..x

She reminds me of Phil atm (although he is fatter!). They both have easily defined shoulders, no crest (by the looks of it), not even a flat back, but nice big grass bellies  I feel your pain!

I don't think she is fat at all. She is a heavy and is also going to look big compared to others. She is lovely and reminds me of my old blue roan clyde cross mare. Best cross country horse I have ever had. She prob will be cow hocked but that is to be expected and is normal for the type. I think the saying goes something like they ***** on one hock and wipe it off with the other!! She is gorgeous and I would be happy to take her home!!!

this post made me chuckle!! thanks xx

To be honest, I do think she looks a bit chubby! These biggies are so hard to get just right weight wise IME. I have seen far far worse, so dont worry yourself over it. Everything seems to have a huge grass belly atm.

cheers, shes 7 - i wasnt a fan of roans, or mares for that matter and look what I ended up with! ;-)

Good news then! :D I'd bet money that she doesn't have the roan gene! ;)

She is definately a sabino (very common in clydesdales) and possibly has the rabicano gene as well (but I'm not putting money on that without a DNA test first :p ).

she looks all right for her size, could do with toning her tummy muscles up a bit (oh but i think we all could do with this as well) she doesnt want to expand any further tho. As for her hocks well you would need to take a back end view for this but fairly normal for a clyde or shire. if she were mine i would hog and trim and show as a very large MAXI cob! She looks very content, enjoy her she is very striking.

Wouldn't say fat, but wouldn't want her getting any bigger, and shedding a little bit and toning up more will do her good :). She's lovely by the way!! :D And hard to tell confo-wise from that pic, try taking some pics on level ground from behind xx

I'd say she looks a little round but certainly not obese. I'd like to see a bit more definition between here neck and shoulders and through her flanks.

I have seen far fatter though so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

She does look like she may be cow hocked but who cares! she's lovely!

I always find judging the weight of roans and greys really difficult for some reason :o But I would say she is a little porky. I wouldn't worry about it at all, I would only say she is very slightly over-weight (if that). You have said you have cut food down (grass) by a quite a lot so hopefully that should get that little bit of weight off she is carrying. If anything its just the grass gut she has, and you can't really judge a horses weight on that becuase even the skinny horses get that!!

She is gorgeous by the way. Just my type :D

ETA: I can't tell if she is cow hocked. But as far as I'm aware it's a very common trait for horses of her build. I believe it was a desired trait 'back in the day' for working heavy horses?? Not 100% on that fact though :p

To me she looks a little overweight, her belly is a bit big and she is carrying a bit too much on other areas but I have seen a lot worse. Her conformation looks good to me and I absolutely love her colouring! Do you have anymore pictures of her as she is stunning! :D

can you feel her ribs when you run your fingers down a rib cage, if you can't then i would say she needs to loose weight. just remember what you can see on the surface means there is a lot more on the inside round the organs etc

the best way to see how fat is to body score your little pony, but if you have an apple bum, spin below the height of the back and can't fell her ribs then i have to say she is a little over weight (like most of us):)
