Hi , found our big horse with a fat hock. It is swollen and squishy (not much heat) across the front of the hock where the two bony bits stick out either side. No pain on manipulation. No swelling down the leg and he is sound. There is no swelling in the back or throughpin area. I have never seen this swelling before except after a kick. He did have a bath yesterday and so was rolling like a loony- could he have bashed himself on the post and rail fence as the prefered rolling patch is right by the fence?
They are all individually turned out so no chance of a kick.
There are no marks to indicate a knock. I am waiting for the vet to ring back but generally they cant fit you in on a monday unless its dying

Please get the vet out, x-ray and demand an immediate referal if necesary for draining. Donkey fell out hunting this year - vets faffed around suggesting diferent treatments, when I put my foot down and demanded a referal Oakham immedialty drained it but because it was left so long the synovial membranes have stretched and she will always have two puffy lumps on both sides - it is like a ruddy flashing lights to every judge - yet she was never lame on it.

Good luck

Ditto, get it looked at. My boys hock is pretty much like SSM's girl's due to having been swolled with synovial fluid (bone chip

); its fine now but will always look puffy due to the joint capsule being distended.
