Why does everyone like to see fat/pudgy labs? My lab isn't thin - he is the perfect weight. My vet threatened to bash me on the head when I asked if he needed to put weight on and people still stop me to ask if he has a problem. One lady stopped me today and told me off for abusing him - I kept my mouth shut about the fact that hers was so fat it shuffled rather than walked...

Sorry for rant - was wound up coz OH's brother had a go at me for training dog to only eat food from his bowl, not scraps from hands/floors etc so he thinks I starve the poor thing. Arrrrgh!!

We popped into my vet's the other day, and sure enough, there was a Lab mix (mostly Lab) that was overweight. The vet said that the dog could stand to lose 5-6lbs. At first glance, the dog didn't seem that pudgy, but then the vet told the owners what every sensible dog owner has known forever: it's much better for a dog to be slightly on the skinny side, especially as it ages. (Turns out that the dog was getting 1-2 hours of off-lead exercise every day, but it was also eating all sorts of naughty stuff.)

I hate to see dogs of any breed not living life to the fullest through being obese/overweight

I'm always being asked what my dog is crossed with...can't be pure lab and not fat obviously! This could be something to do with his size though, but he is a particularly slim athletic lab. He does weigh the same as I do...so not small by any means.
 
It gets on my goat too!

My labs are all nice and slim (well Tina is fairly big boned for a lab, she isn't terribly well bred and people think she's fat however you can clearly see it's all muscle and she has one of those unfortunate saggy tums after being spayed!)
Enjoying the beach, a fat lab could hardly run like this.

And then Windsor was as fit as a butchers dog and maintained this look right up until he was PTS.

k9h's lovely Quail is like Loki, skinny dog with lovely long legs.
 
I hate to see any dogs overweight. I recently had one of my girls at the vets for a check pre speying and said to the vet that I would need to get a bit of weight off her before the op and keep her slim once done. The vet laughed and said if I thought she was fat I should see some of the dogs they get brought in.

It makes me really cross when I see fat dogs and stupid people who feed their dog chips (!) and other rubbish. It doesn't make your dog love you any more! All they are doing is pushing their dog closer to an undignified life and no doubt a painful death due to fat related diseases.

I'm usually good with my dog breeds, but I asked the very same question of a man and his snazzy Portuguese Water Dog the other day. Apologised profusely, of course!
 
I have a choccy lab bitch, I got her at 9 months, and she was so fat she looked like a giant hedghog! She is prone to putting weight on so I am incredibly strict. I never feed dogs unless it goes in their bowl, and I dont give them scraps although the OH does

She is not to bad weightwise now, but she has a 'fat mentality' and is so unagile its embarassing, unless she is chasing a small furry creature. I do know that her hips are very bad, which I believe was caused by carrying the huge amount of weight she had as a young dog. I would love to have had a pedigree litter from her but not with her hip bad hips, its not fair.

I do however have a lovely pointer x puppy from her litter with my old dog, so maybe that is an option.

Hiya

We have a chocolate lab bitch, who has quite short legs and is stocky in build, is she classed as a working lab?

Ours gets called fat as well we bought her from a breeder and with them she had had 3 litters and wasnt even 3, we have had her spayed. She wouldn't play when we got her, a couple of years after we rescued a collie who has taught her to play and she runs all over the place.

She has a deep chest and a really thick coat but she has got a covering over her ribs but you can feel them, does she sound fat?
 
To me a working bred lab is one that has working lines within it's pedigree and previous lines has actually been used for work. Some, if not most of the previous lines with say FTCh or FTW which stand for Field Trial Champion and Field Trial Winner.

How horrible for your wee one to have had 3 litters and not even 3 years old

thanks Gina, you have completely restored my faith!! I have quite a stocky bitch but is pure muscle, she is taken a good 6-7 miles per day if not more and then a good 12-13 at weekends, but she also has a saggy belly from being spayed. She is not atypical lab and doesn't eat a lot, she will pick at her food as and when she wants it but as it is dry we can leave it out for longer -problem is that not only people make comments but the vets say she needs to lose weight!!! ARRRRRGH!! BTW your pics are lovely!

Have no idear why people let labs in particular get so overweight,no excuse for it.

As for dogs being "pampered" with human food grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
 
Ah rite that makes sense, she has been shown so i don't think she must be i will have a look on her papers. I will try and get some pictures for you. How do u put pictures on the bottom of what you post and next to your user name?

god i hate to see overweight dogs to me its just as cruel as being starved when i was at kennels we had a lab come in who was so fat his feet would bleed when ever he walked it was disgusting!!!!but alot of labs and rotties are overweight so people think its normal
 
I take both of my yellow labs picking up so they are very fit & according to my vet, are the perfect weight.

A woman that lives in my village has a HUGELY overweight 5yr old black lab and is convinced that neither of my labs are pure bred & is horrified that the vet has said they are the perfect weight!

My 2 girls dont help themselves either, we sometimes bump into the neighbour whilst out on a walk, my 2 are constantly bringing dead things back to me & neighbour is convinced their telling me to feed them more!

I did the same a while back when I admired a mans lovely scruffy lurcher, only to be told sniffily that it was a rough coated poodle that he had bred!
 
OH's lab is slim - 10 months old. OH being a vet helps... Main worry for growing dogs is OCD, like for young warmbloods!

I had seeing the number of fat labs. Ours is often mistaken for another breed, but as he's fox red, and working bred and slim, there's lots of reasons to mistake him, main one being colour!

I've been asked if he's a vizla, or a ridgeback!

Oh, I know a fat lab, a rescue, his new owner is trying hard to get the weight off him and exercise him more, but it's a battle, as he's too fat to exercise much - he weighs 42Kg!

I can see the ribs on my lurcher, and the terrier is skinny as she chases after the lurcher all the time (losing battle that one!) but the spaniel is a natural fatty, loses weight well through the shooting season but can put it back on far too quickly. Don' t know how she does it, lots of exercise, less food than she should have, and no titbits...
