I know everyone loves a BOGOF so just for fun - is my lovely, no hassle, dream horse Betty about to throw a spanner in her perfect works by making me a granny or has she just over indulged on grass since arriving at the end of April?

She came over on the boat from Ireland mid April, and I’m wondering if she is pregnant if it could be a seven month belly rather than an about to pop belly. But I’m also wondering if maybe she has had a foal before and just carries her weight funny now (I sympathise with her if this is the case...) no idea what she looked like this time last year to compare but she’s certainly changed shape quite dramatically since she came to me!

I only asked (can't see the first photo big enough) as the 2nd one could look cushingsey as much as it looks pregnancey
First pic. I have lots of nicer ones but no point sharing as she definitely doesn’t look pregnant in them. Vet coming tomorrow, so if it’s not a baby we’ll discuss boot camp / further investigations etc.

It’s difficult to tell I would get a vet to check. It better safe than sorry I bought a mare that was pregnant But wasn’t told turn up to the yard one day and was met with a big surprise .

I doubt a 7month belly would be that large though. It almost looks like an oedema but you’d be able to tell if it was I think.

I am used to over weight horses as mine are very plump but even I would be worried about the odema/ fat over her front leg get a vet check and take it from there I would say.

Interested to hear what the vet says. I can't really tell from the photo, it's sometimes easier to tell from the front or the back as normally they're a bit squint in the belly if they're pregnant. She doesn't have any topline so it could just be that she's very droopy in the belly.

I never assume a mare isn't hiding something until they've been with me for a year! Maybe I just don't trust people, but my friend got a surprise with 2 weeks worth of notice, and the little pony I have on loan at the moment wasn't known about until the day before she was born!

She is certainly an odd shape and could well be pregnant but would need better pictures really standing square from the front, back and side head straight forward

Just thinking about timings, based on a late season in October or an early season in March before you got her, realistically she'd either have to be ready to drop, or only about 7 months. My gut feeling is that she's probably had a foal or two in the past- she does a bit of a dipped back (although my cushings mare has a similar back despite never having had a foal). Is she symmetrical from behind?

This is my gut feeling too. The vet came today but sadly we still have no answer. Due to a miscommunication with the receptionist the vet was under the impression I had refused permission to physically examine her (I wasn’t there as I was working) so she has taken bloods and sent them away for testing. So a few more days to wait.

For comparison this was May, not long after she arrived. Her teeth have been done and were a bit jaggy so may have just piled on weight now that she can eat. She gets no hard feed, comes off the grass for eight hours out of every 24 and is working (fairly gently but mostly in trot) five or six days a week.

This is my fear ? I used to be scared of being pregnant and not realising until I gave birth (happened to a girl I knew when I was younger) now transferred my fears to Betty!

You can get horse pregnancy tests off the internet that you dip in wee if you want a quick test?

I was googling earlier to see if human pregnancy tests would work! It’s only a few more days to wait, and if she is pregnant it must be seven months rather than ready to drop so I’m not freaking out too much about the wait.

Human ones won't do the job. Hope you find out soon ?

Also do remember that a lot of mares cycle all year round so still could be any time. Sweet little pony near me had a lovely foal on New Years day a couple of weeks after a dressage test !

noooooooooo...!
should also maybe mention that she doesn’t appear to have had a season since I’ve had her. I was thinking I had gotten lucky and wondering what all the fuss about mares and their seasons was about...

I’m going to guess she’s just fat, and has had foals before . She has very large fat pads above her legs. Her tummy looks just like my old broodmares did over the summer . Her coat looks odd as well , I agree with Ester she sort of looks as though she has cushings .
