My friend got her lovely mare in summer.

She has dramatically changed shape recently.

Her worming programme is up to date and is otherwise very healthy.

What do you think? I know its hard to say without getting the vet out - but whats your opinoin?

Thanks!

What does the nail say?:)

Could be fat or could be pregnant, most of my mares look like that, some are in foal, some aren't. Those udders aren't full, often that is the normal appearance for a mare that has foaled before. Anything in them?

Two options really, get the Vet out or wait and see.

The nail? ( doh - should always follow links before I post! :p)

Ah thats interesting - her udders are huge compared to her field mates - but we know her field mate has never had a foal, whereas she has. Thats good to know that it may just be the normal appearance of them.

They felt er.. a bit more solid than i expected them to feel, as in they werent spongy, but nothing came out of them, no residue either.

Yeah that what I said to my friend, just a waiting game. I think she was concerned that it could potentially be a tummy problem - ie if she had gorged on the haylage.

has she been out with anything that could have got her in foal?

We dont know - was bought from a dealer in summer.

i'd get the vet out to do an internal, to cancel the guesswork. if she's had a few foals those teats could be totally normal, but if she's a maiden, I think she's pregnant.

The vet and farrier mentioned that she had had faols in the past when they first seen her in summer. :)

i would defo get the vet, if she has had foals before it may just be wieght gain, but you need to know as if she is in foal you will need to change her diet at some point in the not to distant and get prepared to foal down e.c.t.

Looks like its going to be an interesting couple of months!

Are there any signs in particular that we shouldlook out for, as in signs of pregnancy?

i would get the vet to do a rectal exam or pull some bloods. then you will know and not be guessing!!! if not pregnant you know you can slim her down and increase /continue her work and if pregnant then you can get prepared, get advice etc etc. looks like she wil hang on til monday ......... call outs are cheaper!! let us know the outcome. Ta

Pregnant. Get your vet out to do a rectal or bloods :)
Good luck!!
Look out for her bagging up in the next few months. Looks like shes a few months to go but as another poster said id put money on it not being far off march time if she is!!
x

I reckon pregnant too. She doesn't look to have huge amounts of fat on the rest of her, to have such a belly - I know they all carry their weight differently, but still....

Ditto getting the vet to look, you may as well find out one way or another for sure!

Looks preggers to me and ditto you need to know. I had bloods done to find out about my BOGOF baby. £30 well spent. She will need extra feed and vits and minerals. Good luck - she looks lovely btw x

She is, 100% angel. Has more manners than any horse ive ever know, would jump the moon if you asked her, is slightly forward going but has loads of brakes in a snaffle, has plenty of bone and strength.

If she is in foal, I'd hope it would be a refelction of its mum, If it was - I'd be hard pushed not to want to have it!!!! :o:D

This has just happened to me with my 4 year old. She looks very much like your mare and I worked it out because she had her rug let out 4 times in 5 days! I think it is the shape of the tummy that is the give away, low slung rather than fat.

The vets think my mare will foal sometime from February onwards and tracing back through the dealer that would be about right. Good luck with it, hope you have a lovely foal and do pm me if you want to chat to someone who is also 'a maiden' with a mare and foal.

Everyone on here has been really helpful to me so far so keep asking questions, they are a great help.
