Fat yearling

mine did not wear a rug untill last winter when she lost a lot of weight she wore a medium weight with no neck and mine live out 24hrs a day 7 days a week she only wore her rug when we had persistant rain and freezing weather combined.

yours comes in every night to dry off so no i would not rug.

with cob types i have usually found they have approx 2 hands of growing from one yr and one hand form 2yrs-that is a rough gestimate though

The magnesium in the Forage Plus will help t break down the fat deposits on his neck.

No rug - horses coats are designed to layer like we layer rugs - they dont need rugs its just a human thing to want to cosset them.

Yep get him walking out - but power walking, not mooching!

To be honest with you, growing youngsters need a lot less feeding than we give them credit for.

I don't think he was looking particularly poor in his first pictures - just looked like a normal, scruffy growing baby to me. And was verging on overweight by the 7 week mark. I really like to be able to feel if not see a rib or two on a baby.

I would personally put him on shavings, continue with the hay (soak it if necessary) then give him a handful of an un-mollassed chaff with a broad spectrum or youngstock supplement added that way he'll be getting all the goodies without the calories.

Stop rugging him. He doesn't need it.

In the spring I think you are seriously going to have to restrict his grazing - start before the grass starts coming through because it won't take long for him to balloon even further.

Little walks are fine but be careful about doing too much with him - particularly while he is so fat as this could ut undue stress on his joints. Particularly if he isn't used to it.
