My father has been in touch today saying that he's looking for some lawn mowers for his 11 acres! Its a shame I live about an hour away from him else I would have filled that 11 acres a long time ago. :D

I don't know the best way to go about finding some horses/ponies for him? I've been looking at the Wales Wick fly grazing story & taking on a few of those would be ideal but don't know how to go about it?

Mum used to run a riding school & was a saddler and they both had horses for years until I arrived on the scene 30 + years ago so they're horsey people but maybe a bit out of sync with all the new gear. Mum is still called on with foaling etc etc.

Any ideas?

Why no advertise for some grazing (turnaway) livery. It takes the responsibility out of owning, and you could get a couple of quid. I know it is in very short supply here. Hence why some are charging £25 per week.

He's Lincolnshire - near Sleaford. He really wants horses back on the land :D
Might be a good idea renting out the land - but not sure how he's feel about that! I'll suggest it to him tho. So if you were renting out 11 acres - how & what would you charge for?

Such a shame I am not a little nearer, I am the wrong side if Lincoln.

Otherwise I would have snapped his hand off :)

Renting is a good way of doing it, and as Said above a good source of income, and he needs only supply water, which he would have had to of done anyway

Thats a shame M, its a beautiful spot!
...Don't start me on Guinea Pigs, I have only just got over my addiction of years!!!

Sheep would be a lot better for the ground, horses leave all the rough patches and sheep fertilise it evenly. Or even, half sheep and half horses and rotate them, that way both stay max healthy as they break each others worm cycle.

Sheep have just come of the land - and quoting my father "if I never see a sheep again that will be too soon"!!!!!
Although I think it sounds like a good idea myself - I think he needs a bit of 'sheep come down time'.

I would like to find out a bit more about grazing rotation of different species - I'm quite good on my crop rotation - just not animal.

Speak to local farmers, neighbour uses my land for his drying off cows, and then calves. I absolutely love having them. Plus points as well are: A dairy cows dont frolic about (usually) so ground is not churned and.....he looks after ground for me, as in rolling, harrowing spreading slurry on it, and if needed weed control, and in the winter he gives me large bale straw for my old age ponies for their stables, and......his wife always cooks christmas cake, biscuits, and.....home made ginger wine, do you think I am on to a good thing, I do. xx:D

Brilliant idea. And if they're dairy, you'll get a good deal on the beef....:)

Now you're making me hungry!!!

ETA: I'll get in touch with Bransby. Spoken to dad & is swaying to the idea of renting the field out - with view to helping with horses if needed... love the ideas thank you all.

Amymay, they are holstein unfortunately and although OH used to be a butcher, I could not face eating anything from them, spend far to much time hanging over gate, trying to get them to come to me, sometimes can just about tickle their ears!!! PS, OH also pointed out that I forgot, the green tomato chutney, the marmalade and the plum jam, :p
