Firstly hello, I'm not a regular in CR, but as I now have a young mare, I'm hoping to start getting out soon. So far we've done one 'Intro' dressage, and just joined our local RC, but we have lots to learn.

Anyway, I'm looking at getting an old basic lorry, a 7.5T, as I'm old enough to drive it on my license. I'd like to be able to carry 3 horses, none of ours are huge, all 14.2hh - 15.2hh middleweights. I've looked at a few boxes, but it's very difficult to work out how much room I need, and of course every seller tells you that theirs will easily carry three.

Could anyone who has carried three smallish horses regularly do me a MASSIVE favour and let me know how big the horse space is in their lorry please? :)

Many thanks!

We have a 7.5 and it has partitions to have 4 horses in, so I'd imagine you'd be fine with only 3. Though we have no living in it except somewhere to throw tack.

Space won't be your biggest problem weight will! If it has living it will be unlikely be under 7.5t when laden. You want 2.5t minimum payload really if you want to carry 3 plus junk!!

Thanks! Yup, already added up, we will be 2.2 - 2.3T, and not really bothered about living, so could always take that out if we were near the mark. But I am checking payload on all that we are looking at.
It just seemed a very small space in the ones I've stood in, and the heights vary too.

I have a 7.5 ton which comfortably carries 3 big horses. There is no living, it is an aluminium body and has no frills & simple partitions. An old fashioned catle truck I suppose. v v handy box. I don't know how long it is, but I have enormous partitions, I could partition it for 5 but have it at 3.

we can carry three big horses - ours are 16.1 (535kg) 16.2 and 17.1. they go side-on or herringbone.

payload is 2.2T and we have a decent living area :)

Thanks guys, I guess I should have been more specific in the post title! What I'm after is the size of your horse area. :o
I went to see 2 boxes yesterday, both are stalled for three, but although width was similar, 2.15/2.2m, one was 2.4m long, the other 2.9m - seems a big difference.
Can anyone tell me what size I should be looking for? I've no access to other lorries to compare.

And it's things like really smart living, with lots of cupboards and really heavy partitions which eat up your payload so just watch that. There is large 7.5 tonne on our yard, partioned for 3 but has so many extras it can only carry 2!

10 foot for 3 horses

Thats 3m. So the one I saw that only have 2.4m was waaaaaay too small, which is what I thought. It just didn't 'feel' right. Thanks for that, perfect.

Yup, and the ones that have so much living area that the horse area looks like it's hanging completely off the back axle, rather than balanced over it. We don't need living to be honest, just a tack space. If anyone needs a comfy seat they can bring a sun-lounger!! Don't think I'll ever be staying overnight. Competing for me will be a run down to the local RC and back. :D

Mine is stalled for four - would only ever travel two as mine are big boys! If you want to travel 3 I'd be inclined to go for one stalled for 4 - that way you'll still have space for shavings/haylage/wheelbarrow etc.

I went for 7ft6in wide x 10 ft length as min for 2 (16hh + 15.2hh) with plenty of room to tack up on board at shows. I got 11ft length and I know it could easily take 3 x 15'3'' - some friends say it would take 4 - but its a no in my view. Plenty of head room helps - go for 7ft6in - but I think weight will be your challenge.
I used to travel 17hh + 16.3hh + 15.3hh in blissful ignorance in a wooden bodied 7.5t lorry.

I must have been soooo over weight but it was down plated from 10T so could take it - and I had no idea what I was doing! It was a little cosy for the boys but they seemed ok. And with 3 x 15.3 they definitely had enough space.

Good luck - horse boxes are challenging and whatever you spend you just don't know if it will be reliable

Thanks, really helpful. One box we looked at had 7ft height, it 'felt' too low, even for our guys.
We have their weights estimated by weight-tape for wormer etc, and out of the potential travellers, most are below 500kg, only one is a touch over. So should never be more than 1.5T for all three. So just adding 3 people, tack, diesel, and 'stuff' we should be ok for 2.2 - 2.3T, but will have to do a few test runs to the weighbridge just to be sure.
When I can find a decent lorry for the paltry amount I have, that is! :D
