feather mites or mud fever?

Argh! It's one thing after another at the moment :rolleyes: Cobby has a small patch if something on his leg, but I can't tell if it's mud fever or mites. It's about the size of a 50p piece about halfway down his front (white) leg, skin is a bit pink and scabby. It started off a bit greasy which is why I'm leaning towards it being mites. I have some PO&S which I can put on but not sure if I should in case it's mud fever? Looking at Google images it could be either as I've caught it very early.

Ideas/thoughts?
 
Just make sure it's not flexural dermatitis (old-fashioned name 'Sallenders' or 'Mallenders' depending on whether it's on the front or back legs) It starts behind the knees or in front of the hocks - hence flexural - and can look quite like feather mites and mud-fever. But it ain't!

My mare has it, on and off. It never really goes away beut can be kept in remission quite easily.

How do you keep it it remission?
 
How would you treat that? Anti fungal/bacterial shampoo?

ETA: just re-googled it and it says that pasternal dermatitis is just another name for mud fever! So will treat it as that :)

At the moment it's not that red or sore - looks like he has a bad case of dandruff! My YO has some stuff for mud fever until I can get to a shop on Tuesday :)

I have this problem with my cob mare. I use pig oil and sulphur. You could "patch test" first to make sure your horse can tolerate. it.
