have been advised to take my horses feathers off to treat mites..I know they would grow back..still is there another way to treat mites without taking the feathers off?

Depends how bad it is. It's easier to treat without the feathers on as you can get to the skin easier.
Taking the feathers off alone won't cure the mites.
I have and have had various hairy legged beasts and found found the quickest and easiest (and most effective) way to treat mites is Front-line. Spot-On is by far easier than the sprap pump. There are other, cheaper brands of fipronil such as virbac.
My local feed store has a license to sell it along with the wormers.
I used a medium sized dog (up to 20kg) pipette per leg, spreading it into a couple of different spots, inc up behind the knee/hock.
The spray stuff if almost impossible do do properly with hairy legs - the spot on it much easier as you just part the hair, squeeze a little on and repeat in different places.

I have a very, very feathery girl. The feather is there to protect against mud & rain it does attract the mites. My mare has had mites and I asked my vet to give her an injection of Dectomax. Sometimes one injection is enough, sometimes they need two. It isn't licensed for horses, but is very, very effective and also acts as a wormer at the same time. I wouldn't bother with all the other so called cures - clipping the feathers, treating with frontline, etc. The Dectomax will certainly do the job, without your horse losing all that lovely feather. Your vet will be able to advise you.

If the legs are covered in scabs and very sore, then yes taking the hair off is a good thing. However, clipping the hair is not necessary if this is not the case. Frontline treatment and then pig oil and sulphur is the way to go.
