Hi

I'm writing another feature for Horse magazine and am once again after some help from the H&H forum.

This time my feature is on people that have traced the history and/or family tree of their horse. Think of the the tv programme 'who do you think you are' but for horses!

Has anyone out there bought a horse from a dealer that turned out to have incredible breeding? Maybe their line can be traced back to a king, sheikh or some historic event. Or maybe they're distant relation of a top competition horse?

Advice on how to trace a horse's bloodlines would also be great - do you know of any good websites?

Any information will be gratefully received.
thanks v much.
Charlotte

I traced my boy's breeding right back, he's TB, dad's american, mum's by glint of gold, who is by Mill reef. Used a variety of websites and lots of searching!

We have Hyperion, Dancing Brave, lots of classic/group one horses.

with both of mine ive gone back to about 1650 (related to each other!)............probably could go futher if i tried!

I bought a rising 3 year old from a lady in Kent who had his mum, and knew she was a clover hill mare, but only knew dad's name. I managed to trace both sides so have his mum's full breeding and am in contact with her current owner (who also has his sister and his mum is in foal again now). Mum turned out to be an excellent jumping horse. Also managed to trace the stud that bred his dad, through them I got his proper papers and passport (via a DNA test) and found all his breeding which includes Ninmerdor and Sandro lines. Bizarrely he is now stabled with his uncle - my boy's grandsire is my friend's horse's dad!

I can trace my boys breeding back to 1600's with some very interesting horses in there which came as a shock! Have PM'd you link to his family history if your interested :)

Here's the little man in question -

I wish! My old girl is gone now, but when I first got her I put adverts with a photo in all the magazines and learned absolutely nothing. I don't even know what her name was before I got her. She was very distinctive and I suspect she may have had several previous owners. I would have done (and still would, actually) anything for a picture of her as a foal. :(

I traced six different horses back to 1850, easy to do when you've got all breed pedigree and an online stud book. Of the six horses and two
Breeds I looked at, I could traces the horses back to their common sires. Quite nice knowing you have cousins etc on the yard!!

I can trace my welsh section a mare back to hackneys/thoroughbreds! And all the way back to the godolphin (sp?) arabian back in the 1700's.

Explains why she's finer than your average welshie and thinks she's a bloody superstar racehorse and expects to be treated like royalty
