I could SCREAM !!!!!!

Our horses are having to stay in again, I can't bear it. My horse hates it. He trashes his stable and it takes me ages to muck out, costs a fortune in bedding and to top it all off its half term.

The poor kids have got to come up the stables with me everyday, which is very stressfull. 2 horses, 2 kids and a dog really don't work well when theyr'e all together.

I know what you mean. The mare's been on box rest for 3 weeks and she is one messy mare!
This weather is ghastly, isn't it??
I suppose we'll appreciate it all the more in the summer. I grew up in South Africa, where one hot, sunny day follows another, all year. I can tell you, UK winters really make you appreciate the summer!
Can you not get the kids to walk the horses while you muck out, or are they too young?

awwwww Cant you throw in some toys , like a football or lick, stop the boredom , get the kids to help out and reward them with a dvd or something. I know its not easy had to take my 2 yr old out this morning with me , but he enjoyed it .

(((hugs))) to you x

Kids try to help, there 5 and 8, but usually just end up creating more work for me as they make such a mess. Bless.

I have tried toys but he's not interested. He has a full haybar, but just throws it all around the stable, coz he's not that hungry.

He does love lickits, but he can eat one in a few hours, i'm not sure that can be very good for him.

aww hugs. Ours just tramples his bed till it resembles brown chaff. I have given up trying to muck him out and just pick up the worst of the wet and the poos and put clean on top. Then he gets a good muck out at weekends.
Set the kids up with a bucket of soapy water in a spare stable or quiet corner and get them cleaning bits and stirrups for pocket money. Let them poo pick empty fields, brush dry mud off rugs etc. My two love sweeping the yard and mixing feeds.

Does he have a water bucket? There's a cob on our yard who hates being in too, and his owner has got him to bob for apples in his water bucket. Keeps him occupied for ages (although he is getting better at it now).
Do you get the chance to ride much? I know the mare is always happier being in if I can give her a really good workout (I have been known to ride at 6am if she can't go out...).
Does he have company? Perhaps a mirror in his stable would keep him more occupied - make him feel like he's got a friend.
This time will pass. Promise.

Hi, well everything has been said about toys for your horse, what about buying the kids a portable dvd player for the car, or a psp? I have 2 boys and if I have to take them to the yard, they stay in the truck with their psp`s. Brilliant. Before the psp`s they had a portable dvd palyer. They are now 11 and 13.
