Fed up with saddle for my Welsh Cob

Could anyone recommend a good saddle? He's a 15.2hh Welsh Cob and Ive had a Wintec Wide on him up until now since he is now 7 and he changed a lot in width when younger (so I could change the gullet easily). But now he's older I think his shape will remain now.

I tried a few saddles on him at the time and this was the only one to slip least side to side. However, it is doing it more nowadays and I cant stand it anymore! I only realised yesterday whilst cantering round the field that it must be so irritating for him when I have to yank the saddle over all the time and Ive done a few XC's in it and it tires me out SO quick because Im always having to try and rebalance in it. He has massive shoulders so I think thats what rocks it.

I can only afford one saddle for him just now, however he does varying disiplines (low level BE, RC SJ, M&M WHP and M&M ridden) so Im very unsure what saddle would suit. I guess just a general GP. However, most GP's dont go wide enough. In his Wintec, he currently has an Extra Wide gullet in just now.

If anybody could recommend a saddle which should fit, please let me know!
 
See if you can get hold of an Ideal WH saddle. they are pretty good on that typr, and is stright enough to not be on his shouder, but still OK for jumping and stuff. He may well need something like an impact pad too.
Ideal will template the saddle for him, but this would mena you need to get a fitter out.
 
The only saddle is the new Ideal F/W/B (for wide breeds) mine cost £900 but worth every penny the wintecs dont even touch the wide breeds.
 
Ok, so Ideal so far then! Will have a look into those now.

Britestar - Have got a few "sticky" type pads - Impakt Pad, N.E.W mesh and one of those new gel ones. All are ok, but still the saddle slips!
 
where in Scotland are you?

i have a saddle company saddle & i really like it, we have a fitter come once a month to Scotland and he is fantastic

i can tell you now a Black Country will fit your cob 100%! i've had 3 now for my welsh d and it's been the only make that fits her perfectly. I've had 2 event saddles and a working hunter.Very smart saddles and they hold their value as lots of native owners like them
 
Re the slipping, It may be worth getting someone to check your horse, as if the saddle slips all the time, it suggest that he himself is slightly uneven, and it may be necessary to flock one side of the saddle slightly more.
 
I have an Ideal International Event, with point and balance straps fitted and ride with a limpet pad (the saddle is fitted with Flair to which helps, but is expensive). I have had huge problems with my saddle slipping to the right in the past and was also advised to use as short a girth as possible, with elastic at one end, on the side the saddle slips to. The other (non-elasticated end) will not 'give' with the horses movement, but the elastic end will, and therefore help to keep it straight. Point and balance straps are really what you need to be looking at though. Good luck!
 
I've always found that synthetic saddles aren't good for rotund sorts - as however good the fit, they always seem to move.

I'd go for the best 2nd hand leather one I could afford, rather than a new or 2nd hand synthetic
 
I wouldnt use a girth with elastic at just one end - this creates uneven pressure on the horse's back and you will end up with more severe muscle problems and even worse one sidedness.

Wintecs are good for cobs generally - I think Thorowgoods fit better. But it depends on the horse and the rider.

I understand your concern, but the whole point of using it was to create an uneven pressure, ie stronger on the left to keep the saddle straight. I did this on the advice of a saddler and discussed it with a different saddler who I had out last week who ok'd it. It does the trick for us. But, you are quite right to express concern and I wouldnt have done it without the advice of a saddler.
