As you know I have a lovely Warmblood X Arab 5 year old gelding (Axel) I've had my fair share of problems with him, but have managed to get over them and now have a fantastic, well behaved horse.

I was talking to somone today and she seemed to think that because her horse is a bit of a nutter and rears, won't hack out or be lunged etc she is a better rider than me and insinuated my horse is a bit of a dobbin

er no, he's just well schooled thanks.

Apparently because he hacks out in front, behind, or wherever I want him to go mainly its because he's a gelding and so laid back.

Yes that's because he's been well trained!
I can't believe that someone would think such a stupid thing

At least you know in your own mind who the better rider is. At least you and your horse will have many happy years ahead of you as a partnership. Her's will either end up god knows where and herself in a wheelchair as a result of allowing it to get so naughty.

I find the horse world full of people like this, who think they have to have a nutty horse to show they can ride better than the rest of us. More fool them - I can't see the fun in having a horse that rears and won't hack out etc etc.
Ignore her, leave her to her delusions and enjoy your lovely horse.

Just smile and let her get on with it. You know the truth and that is all that matters. The reason why she is doing it, is just her trying to make herself feel better because she is a pants rider, cant recognise when her horse is in pain, cant feed it correctly, hasnt got the balls to repremand it ... the list could go on.

Chin up!

I can never understand people who seem to boast about having a horse that can't do this or that because it is a nut job..
Well done for getting through a difficult period and coming out of it with a horse that sounds very pleasant.!!

Credit where credits due...you sound like you have done a fantastic job with Axel.

If it were me i'd smile sweetly and say thanks for complimenting me on my schooled well behaved horse and good luck getting yours to behave.

Cant stand people wh think its cool to be on a horse with no manners!

Was that who I think you mean?

A well behaved well schooled horse gives you more options for a start. You can hack safely alone, you can lead or go behind in a group. They will stand still whilst you stop for a chat or out hunting. You can lunge them whether it be for fitness, to work on a specific issue or just for exercise. This also means if they have a sore back etc you don't have to stop their work completely unless it is advised. None of this makes a horse a plod - just well mannered.

The thought of being dumped on the road, or kicked in the head or pushed over whilst leading to the field is not attractive

i know exactly what you mean.

i rode Frankie down the road to the local riding school, where he used to have lessons with his old rider. when i turned up the drive i had about 2 people come up to me, 'oh is that Frankie?' to which i replied 'yes' and they were all like 'oh he's crazy/nutty/stupid' etc etc! apprently round these parts he used to be called 'Frank the w@nk!'

apprently his old rider used to gee him up and brag about that fact the he used to spook and spin and do all sorts....used to make him look like a good rider........when i rode at this riding school i had an audience, as if they were waiting for him to be stupid and me to fall off! well they didn't get a show, apart from being a bit tense he was fine
grin.gif
and i would much rather him be that way

just be proud of yourself, its much better to have gone through all that and have a well behaved good mannered horse than a crazy one

You will find that many people mistake good behaviour & good schooling for a plod!

Try owning a heavy horse, people assume that they are plods. docile etc just because of what they are. Just shows how little they know.

a horse that is a challange to ride is very different to a horse which is a pleasure to ride.

why do people judge themselves on how good a rider they are by how naughty their horse is? Its nonsense, its not cool to have a horse thats hard to do anything with! I have had experience of this and its just jealousy, sounds like you are re-educating your horse which makes you the better rider by far!

did the same with my 'dobbin' who is nearly full TB and yet is a good lead horse for hacks

person found out he wasn't sucha dobbin and that was only in the school - hehe

If she was a better rider, her horse wouldn't have all those problems!! Thats like a driver saying, oh my car stalls all the time, but I handle it therefore I can drive better, or someone saying oh my dog is mental, needs to be muzzled and is really bargy but I can handle it so I must be a better dog handler!!

What A tit!

Ha! I get this all the time...especially with an arab. Just because he will go where he is put and do what he is told, oh, well, he can't be a 'typical' arab then can he?!? No, actually, he is a typical arab - who was very well brought up by his previous owners and I honestly believe any arab or any other breed of horse with his upbringing would be the same. But like many of you, I'm more than happy for anyone who thinks my horse is a dobbin to get on and have a go....I'll even bring popcorn and a comfy chair
smile.gif
Lent him to someone to take ona group ride earlier this year....oops, he caused a stampede! And she is a pretty decent rider too....

A well schooled, happy and consistently well behaved horse reflects brilliantly on the owner and rider in my opinion esp if the horse was once a 'problem' case. There's no such thing as a problem horse, only problem owners causing the difficulties!

Next time she tries this line, why not say, very sweetly and politely:

"Oh yes, Axey was like that too when I first got him. But of course with some good schooling any horse can be improved. Have you thought about maybe having some lessons? Or perhaps getting a more experienced rider to school your horse for you?"

LOL!

Not only that hon but this is the same person that broke her finger whilst lunging said horse because she had the line wrapped round her finger and the same person that should have been disqualified at the last dressage but wasn't coz the judge was so nice.
As I have already said Alee can lunge and hack better that her horse and she is only 3.
Don't let her get to you the comment earlier in the post was spot on!!

This person sounds like a nob that cant ride to me!!

This is the comment......i'd like to see her get on most of the horses at our yard and cope!!

There'll always be people around that knew you and Axel from the start.

People still come up to me and say ' well done with your neddy, it was all your own work'. They're people who knew what she was like at the beginning, and the blood sweat and tears that got as where we are today.

I feel sorry for people like her. Well done you.

people like that make me sick! We dont all have well behaved horses when they arrive with us, its the time and patience put in that makes them so good!!

I hate the "oh my horse rears" giggle giggle as if its a cool thing. Its really not, its dangerous and plain stupid if people believe it makes them a better rider!

I have just taken on a 7 year old that is a baby for all intents and purposes, he improves all the time and I am loving him. My oldie was fairly physcotic when I first had him, he is an angel now, through experience, change of scenary and some degree age, but he wasnt always that easy!!

Just ignore people like that. I loan a pure ID dobbin!!However people who ride out with me know that he is quietly wanting to be an irish X!!!

Well I have had Axel since he was a yearling and I backed and brought him on myself.
I'm very pleased that I have a horse with no issues whatsoever, and I'm happy to say that the few people that have ridden him have had no problems with him either.
