Feed Advice for a NF

My mare is now at a weight i am happy with, probably slightly over, but im being picky....

Over winter she has had Hi Fibre spillers horse and pony nuts and Alfa A chaff.

She literally gets a handful once a day now, however i was considering changing chaff, what do you think?
 
Why is her current diet not working for her? Is it because she is now getting a bit fatter than you want?

I feed my good doer NF a handful of good doer chaff, a handful of slim and healthy mix and 20gms of NAF slimline powder balancer to make sure he gets his vitamins.

If he does more work like is going show jumping or on a long distance ride then I will up his mix to half a scoop so he has plenty of energy.

Do you mean she gets a handfull of each?

Is it necesary to feed her hard food at all?
 
Her work load is increasing, but ive heard a few people mention that alfa a chaff isnt the best chaff to give her due to protein?

Is there a better one to give.

Yes she gets a large ish, handful of chaff and the same of nuts.
 
My NFXTB who is in light work at the moment gets a 1/4 scoop twice a day of Safe and Sound, a slice of soaked hay when he is standing in and carefully srip grazed on the spring grass.

My retired NF doesnt need any hard food, but to keep the peace while the others are fed, he gets a tiny handful of Safe and Sound twice a day.
 
Is safe and sound (excuse my stupdity) a chaff? or is it a complete feed?

How much do you pay for it?

Would she need pony nuts with it?

My Newfie and my highland are on no hard feed as they have enough grass and don't need it for light work. - after exercise I give a couple of carrots as a treat but no feed as they have enough energy without it.

Why are you looking to change your feed?
 
I have heard a few mixed reviews about the alfa a chaff. so was considering changing it.

I like the idea of safe and sound, is it a whole feed?
 
Well if it hasn't made yours itchy I wouldn't worry about that for a start ;)

Ditto the others really, sounds like she barely needs anything anyway so whatever chaff you're giving her it's such a minimal amount it really doesn't matter I wouldn't have thought. A forester at this time of year with a reasonable bit of grazing will live on thin air, but for reference...

She is lunged 2 times a week for around 15-20 minutes and hacked once a week for an hour and schooled once a week.

All walk and trot work.
