Ive just got my new boy, he is a 15.3 Cleveland Bay X & is 16 years old. He was previously used as a riding school horse and for many events inc XC and SJ but has had a lengthy time off.

I am now starting to get him back into a fitness regime! His weight is odd, I can see most of his ribs but he does also have a bit of a belly, I am hoping with the correct work that will go.

He lacks condition all over and needs topline building. He is currently on good long grass, if not a bit dead on top & 1 handful of Bailys light Balancer for his vits.

I want something to support him to build muscle and get as fit as possible as soon as possible!

Thank you in advance, and if anyone would care to share any fitness tips that would be greatly appreciated!

Lets start at the beginning, weight loss or poor condition may have several reasons.

First worm him with a good quality broad spectrum wormer, a 3 in 1 wormer would be the best.

Have teeth checked by an Equine Dentist, sharp teeth don't help with weight gain

Have a test done for Cushings.

Feed wise he will need a diet with a good protein source, around 10% along with carbs to increase weight. A feed with an oil base would help put on weight without making him too silly.

To build muscle you need to work them correctly. Schooling in circles, loops and serpentines along with transitions between paces and within paces.

You cannot get a horse fit in a hurry! Otherwise you'll end up with a lame horse. Build work up slowly and steadily.
