Hi, I have a 17hh Exracer who is a horrendous doer. He is currently fed 4.5 kg of conditioning cubes, one scoop of sugar beet (Soaked not dry weight) aloe vera supplement and linseed meal. In the winter he gets 6kg of cubes and gets equi jewel added. This keeps his weight on perfectly and he is very very happy with it. However... he is ridden 6 times a week and often ends up going on a plod on his days off and im finding he doesn't have the energy.. Would like to start hunting and jumping him so he needs just that little bit extra.

He has suffered with ulcers in the past so the feed needs to be mindful of that. The only reason he is ridden 6 times a week is because he gets very stressy when out of work so i find it easier to keep his brain ticking over by riding him everyday.

Thank you in advance :)

Call some reputable feed merchants and ask advice. I spoke with Pure Feeds and they recommended a feed for my ulcer-prone mare, and were very helpful overall. She's a good-doer though, so not the same situation as you!

As This - I spoke to Topspec and was really detailed and they have kept his information on record and gave me some great advice. I intend to call again and ask about my other horse too once his current mix runs low.

Keep it simple; good quality alfa alfa (stuff without GMO, Molasses etc), oats (good protein, low starch) and oil if he needs energy (cold pressed linseed I've heard is good). If you a phone a feed company they'll ultimately say buy one of our feeds. But if you look at the packets most commercial feeds are choc a bloc with filler or extruded waste products of other processes. Try feeding straights and see how he goes, I've found this really effective with my ROR and I can up anything easily. Plus its much cheaper than commercial feeds.

We feed ours as simple as possible. He lives out and has adlib hay in the winter, he has half a scoop of pure and simple easy. He had grade 4 ulcers and is completely clear now. He has gone from a really miserable hoses to the happiest and loving.

How much and what forage does he get/eat?
Does he get turn out?
I believe looking after horses particularly ulcer prone ones is far more than just what they eat.
Does he relax, rest, sleep, does he lack energy under saddle because he is not really resting, does he need more energy in feed or a management change?
