I fed Top Spec for about a month and it turned my horse into a lunatic. He was back to normal within a week of stopping it.

I used Blue Chip last year but only because I won 2 bags in a competition! Wouldn't normally feed it, far too expensive! Axels coat looked fab but that was the only thing I noticed.
Have used Top Spec in the past on a very skinny TB and he looked fantastic after only 3 or 4 weeks. So would def use that again.

TopSpec Anti-Lam at the moment. Dan hates powdered supplements and i like to make sure he gets vits&mins as is always on restricted grazing due to being too fat! He is also still fairly recently recovering from an op, so I wanted him to have increased protein levels to help his recovery. And his feet have never looked better or been stronger - even farrier noticed difference.

Over priced rubbish. I saw no difference using blue chip at £30 a bag to using Balanced horse feeds show mix at £8.
Feed balancers are just another way of manufacturers cashing in on gullible horse owners who have more money than sense!!

Nope, I think they are an overpriced fad (sorry!), Spring is on a fibre only diet with an all round vit/min and oil.

Well yeah thats the general idea i've had really-a way to make more money(blushes)I hand on heart have never fed a balancer to any of my horses

thanks! i wouldn't call myself a gullible horse owner. i'm a qualified vet for a start! i certainly dont have money to chuck away either, but my horse spits out powdered supplements and doesn't need hard feed, but does needs vits&mins and he has recovered amazingly for a 20yr old after a general anaesthetic and farrier thinks his feet are wonderful - i'll stick with the overpriced rubbish thanks - you could keep your insults to yourself!

Don't judge all balancers the same - they are NOT all like Blue Chip, neither are they a way for manufacturers to "cash" in on the market. I find that I actually SAVE money feeding a balancer!

I am just not sure why they are so expensive, when you can buy a bag of high fibre cubes that will not put weight on your horse, but have all the essential vits and minerals needed for everyday for £7? Or soemthing like Happy Hoof that is designed to provide essentials for those on a low calorie diet?

Jus my own opinion though...

i've never fed a balancer until after his op, but just felt he needed a bit of a helping hand as an old man recovering from a GA and i am pleased with how well he is looking and how well his rubbish feet are doing compared to normal. you still have to feed ridiculous amounts of high fibre cubes, or even happy hoof to get the right amount of vits&mins into them, and i wanted a higher protein level for recovery. he just doesn't need any food, so a handful of balancer is fab for him. wouldn't say all horses needed them, but i am liking it for him right now. if i had a younger model who was fit and healthy i'd just feed a chaff and high fibre nuts, but i think he needs a little more of a helping hand.

I wasn't referring to you personally and I wasn't insulting you personally either. This forum is about people stating opinions, this is mine, take it or leave, not bothered really!!
I was simply stating my experience and clearly other people feel the same way!!
No offence intended.

there's just no need to be so over the top - it's quite enough to say that you dont think they're worth the money. everyone else managed to state their opinions perfectly politely, and actually I think it was only Lucy and Nigel who said they dont feed them and never have. The majority of responses were from people who do.

there really wasn't any need to shout that in your signature either! forums are meant to be friendly - people can still have different opinions, but be nice about it! makes me realise why i stick to certain other forums most of the time - you'd get kicked off by a mod for talking to another forum member like that. you wouldn't talk to someone in real life like that (at least i hope not!), so why should it be different just because we're not face to face?

Hey hey, are you not perhaps being a little over sensitive here? I haven't directed any insults anyone, why would I get kicked off when I haven't aimed anything at anyone specifically.
There has been many times I've had a dressing down on posts but I haven't gone quite so off the deep end as you're doing.
I appreciate as a qualified vet you have the right to express professional opinions but I have years of experience and I have the right to express that too.
Like I said - I didn't aim insults at anyone in particular and I'd like you to show me where I have???!!

You see this is exactly why I would NEVER use a balancer. What the heck is in it that makes a horse turn around in such a short space of time.....nothing natural that's for sure.

In answer to your poll - NO I would never ever use a balancer.......not unless they printed EVERY single "thing" they add to it on their list of ingredients.

I feed TopSpec balancer, primarily as we have crap grazing, my horse was 26 and his feet were gradually getting more and more crumbly. My feed lady advised trying him on TopSpec mainly for the biotin for his feet and probiotics for his gut as he was getting older. Also making sure all minerals and vitamins were covered ( as grass rubbish) Three years later he is thriving, his feet are much better.

I use topspec on both my oldies as it gives them all the supplements they need plus it is a safe way of building topline and muscle without high levels of protein or starch. I feed high fibre and high oil to both mine.
