My horse gets a fairly large feed in a relatively shallow big trug off the floor. It's a large feed as it's soaked so increases in volume. He chucks it everywhere!! Apart from a car tire is there anything I can use to feed from the ground? He gets his evening feed in the field and chucks it all over. Is there a risk of sand colic with him doing this? Thank you!

A car tyre works for one of mine, but my youngster can still manage to pick the bucket up out of the tyre and lob it everywhere. He also puts his foot in the bucket and scoops it out that way as well, so for him I have resorted back to an over the door bucket on his field gate...

My gelding would do this. He would grab the handle thats always on shallow feed bowls, and lift the bowl up throwing it everywhere.
So i got a handle-less cheap shallow plastic washing-up bowl from amazon, and found a car tyre for it to fit in perfectly without there being a gap between the edge of the bowl and the tyre rim. That stopped him from getting his mouth on the edge of the bowl, and her presto! Its worked a treat.

It doesnt fit a huge feed, about 1.5-2 level stubbs scoops.

I did think about screwing down a heavy small feed manger, or casting a bowl from concrete…something too heavy for him to lift!

If you want the amazon link let me know and ill check the car tyre size it fits perfectly in. Garages will happily give away old tyres as they mostly now pay to get rid of them.

I don't give mine big feeds as I remember a article on FB when someone measured out different size tub trugs with feed, showing how we over feed, then unfortunately the horse was pts (medical reason) and stomach removed full showing feed more than the stomach can take. Was a real eye opener, and a bit gross. I would prefer to feed 4 smaller feeds than one humongous feed. or a corner manger which i use and if you put the metal bitss on the corners they cant chuck it out.
