I need to decide on feed for my mare for this winter (s. hemisphere here).

I've decided on a good mix for her, but she won't hold her weight on that alone, so I need to decide between the following.

Extruded barley or rice bran pellets

Copra or speedibeet.

She also gets a good chaff (http://www.fiber-fresh.com/equine/products/fiberprotect/) and plenty of grass and/or hay. She lives out year round, and is currently trace clipped (would be blanket clipped but she threw a strop and we couldn't do anymore). She's in light to medium work, six days a week.

I won’t feed any mix feed to my horses even if they need weight I use alternatives like nuts etc, I get feeding advice from the Equine Nutrition’s like D&H.

By far the biggest part of her diet will be fodder, if that is good enough and plentiful enough you shouldn't need much else except to carry supplements. The amounts in a bucket at best will be the icing on the cake. If it isn't working then maybe you need to analyse your hay and balance any deficiencies such as minerals, but really the basis for it all is good quality hay(lage).
