Ok so I am trying to build mucsle on my mare. She is walked out in hand twice a week (can't do any during weekdays as it is so dark when I get up there) Lots of hill work, walk and trot for an hour or so. She is currently fed a handful of happy hoof and scoop of Garlic twice a day. Is there anything else I can feed her to help me build the muscles up? Once the saddler has come, I am going to pay my YO to ride her out once during the week too. We are also waiting for the lights in the school to be done. She will be long lined when this is completed.

She is a good doer, so I am looking for something that will not add too much weight on her.

Thanks in advance

The most obvious solution would be to feed her a balancer of some sort - this will give a concentrated amount of protein, alongside her daily allowance of vit/mins, in a small amount of feed.

Baileys does a top line conditioner, why not give their nutritional phone line a call - it's free and you don't have to take their advice!

I assume she is a baby though? If so I wouldn't worry too much, as she does more work she should start to develop a nice top line on her own, so a general feed and supplement for her type and condition should give her the protein and nutrients she needs :0)

The garlic hasn't been shown to really provide any benefit (the odd horse gets "fly relief" but that's only in the summer, and potentially it can upset the gut as it is a powerful antibiotic. I'd cut it out, then instead of a chaff, as others have said, feed a balancer. This wil give a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals - as well as great protein and amino acids. My fave as a starting point is Top Spec Comprehensive Balancer - the pelleted one, the other is a powder and does not have the protein base.

You could supplement about 25 ml of lysine per day. Lysine is an essential amino acid that can be limiting in equine diets even when overall protein amount fed is sufficient.

You can get it from Equimins at less than £4 per kilo but you'll need to call - its not on their website.

Equitop myoplast - its expensive but it really works and you get £15 off your first tub x

Unfortunately it didn't make any difference to mine even when being worked correctly etc etc. My vet says he hears mixed reviews on it so I wish I had saved my money
