He/She will be 6 months old when we get it....

I know most about them....Before I enquire elsewhere I just wanted to know if anyone could recommed what I feed it, how much, what brands??

I don't know anything about feeding weanlings, he will not have a mare with him when we get it.

Don't say "If your asking this your not ready" because I have already had that, and anyways, if I don't ask I'll never find out!!

Thanks in advance

Emma

My weanling was eating the mare's stud balancer when I weaned him. He was kept on that (as it's appropriate for youngstock as well as the mare) and when he started needing extra calories I added in micronized linseed. The balancer let him have all his vitamines and minerals and protein without the extra starchs which can cause problems in growing babies.

Ask the stud you're getting him from what he's on as they wean him as you'll need to keep him on the smae and change him to whatever you choose slowly as they can be fussy and you have to be careful with their guts.

My preference is either baileys or blue chip for the balancer

I don't give any of my youngsters feed until they are in proper work tbh, they get grass and good quality hay/haylage when necessary. It does depend on the breed of your weanling, mine are IDx types. Unless there is a deficiency in your grazing then I would stick to quality forage and maybe a balancer if absolutely necessary.

Yeah, that was the idea, as he will be turned out most of the time, It's most likely we'll be getting a Cob. It's just I was told he was to be stabled during the winter and he will need food for then (:

Thanks
